India Receives Surpise Defeat From Afghanistan - South Asian Federation Championship

Afghanistan was already one goal up before half-time, with Sanjar Ahmadi doubling the lead in the second half.

The fiercely competitive match was watched by an estimated 5,000 fans at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.

Afghanistan has only recently re-emerged on the world football scene after decades of war and insurgency.

There were scenes of celebration and joy on the streets of Kabul, where people crammed into restaurants and cafes to watch the final.

The Afghan team suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to India when the two sides met in the 2011 final in Delhi.

India, ranked 145th in the world compared to Afghanistan's 139th, has won the event six times.

The defending champions missed several good opportunities, says BBC Nepali's Surendra Phuyal in Kathmandu.

They did their best to dominate and equalise, but the Afghan defence and its goalkeeper proved too smart for the Indian forwards, our correspondent says.

After the match ended, the Afghan players danced on the pitch in celebration with the Afghan flag draped on their shoulders.

"You can't imagine how big this moment is for our country, our fans, our team and me," Afghan coach Yousef Kargar said.

"We have proved that we belong in the world of football. Our team has improved a lot over the last few years and I am sure we will get better in the years to come."

Celebratory gunfire rang out around the Afghan capital.

Although not banned, football was severely restricted in Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban from 1996 to 2001.

Taliban Attacks US military Base, Counter Attack in progress

Taliban fighters attacked part of a US military outpost in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Monday, officials said, less than a week after targeting a Polish base in a nearby province.

Attacks on Afghan security forces and civilians have also mounted this week

killing dozens and adding to fears the drawdown of foreign troops, most of whom are due to leave the country by the end of next year, is allowing insurgents to regain lost territory. "In a parking lot used by Americans there was a huge blast and after that a massive attack... A number of our heroes are fighting," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in an email.

The attack prompted police to shut part of a highway between the provincial capital and Torkham district near the border with Pakistan, a security source said. The base itself had not been penetrated. No casualties had been reported, provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.

News : Suicide Bomb Attack in Afghanistan, near Indian embassy

Jalalabad: A suicide blast outside the Indian consulate in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan has reportedly left at least eight people dead and another 12 injured.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, all Indian officials working at the consulate are safe.

The blast took place around 10.00 am. Those killed reportedly included security staff and locals who were outside the consulate at the time of the blast.

The explosion reportedly took place barely 15-20 metres away from the consulate. The building has suffered some damage. There were also reports of firing outside the consulate.

"A car containing explosives hit a barrier near the consulate and detonated," Ahmadzia Abdulzai, Nangarhar province spokesman, told news agency AFP.

Afghan security forces have sealed off the scene and several ambulances have been rushed to the site.

According to sources, a security assessment team from Delhi had visited the consulate three days ago in the wake of intelligence inputs about the attack.

The Taliban has denied carrying out the attack in a text message to the media.
