Blackberry opens 'channels'; Also partners with Micromax, Spice and Zen

Blackberry enters the social networking side of things. The latest changes provides users with a twitter like micro messaging interface to interact with friends. The new move is considered to be the attempt of blackberry in monetizing the BBM.

The new change is named as channels which allows BBM users to follow their favorite products or celebrities with entities similar to hashtag. The company said its social network will be built into its BBM messaging service, which will be available first to BlackBerry users, and sooner will be preinstalled on some Android devices across Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reports.

BlackBerry is reportedly partnering with a number of emerging-market smartphone manufacturers to have BBM preinstalled on their devices, the report added.

TOI reports that Blackberry will partner handset makers from India, like Micromax, Spice and Zen, other nations to pre-install the popular messaging app on their smartphones.

With the BBM app coming pre-installed, users can directly engage with other BBM users without having to download the app or incurring download charges.

"BBM will soon come preinstalled on a variety of Android-based smartphones from leading OEMs across Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East," BlackBerry said in a statement.

BlackBerry is betting big on Channels to rake it additional revenue in the coming months. Brand owners, who will pay for using Channels, will get to connect with users and reach out to newer audiences in return new ones.

The Canadian firm has been facing stiff competition from other smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung as sales have declined over the past few months.

Blackberry Z30 Hands On Review and Video Test

The Z30 isn't BlackBerry's first smartphone to entirely break up with the old ways and go after the multimedia powerhouses of the competition. In fact, a five-incher must've been on the cards ever since the 4.2" Z10 appeared early this year. This sure looks like a steep increase in screen size but Blackberry must've been aware of the fact that they needed to catch up and do it fast. It's a 720p Super AMOLED display too, a second for the company after the Q10, but the first full-scale touchscreen.

The Z30 is powered by an upgraded Qualcomm chipset with a more recent GPU and has better battery backup than the preceding Z10. The latest version, 10.2, of the BB OS brings lockscreen notifications, a new instant preview and reply feature, new Priority Hub, updated system apps, USB host and more.

Here is the BlackBerry Z30 complete feature list.

BBM Launch postponed For Android

BlackBerry's popular messaging service, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), was due for a roll out on Saturday evening. But, the app never made it to the Google Play store and left a lot of Android users confused.

Later, a leaked version of the app surfaced online that was downloaded by over a million users.

For iPhone users, things went smooth as the BBM for iOS was available for download from Apple App Store approximately 20 minutes before the scheduled time.

This morning, BlackBerry has announced that it was pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. The official BBM twitter account tweeted," We know you're waiting. Pausing #BBM4All rollout to fix issues caused by unreleased BBM for Android app."

The announcement says, "The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already - more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app - is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day."

BBM app from the App Store has been taken off but those who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to use it. Whereas the unreleased Android app will be disabled, users who downloaded the app will have to visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability. The leaked Android app has not been disabled yet and is working at the moment. The user interface of the BBM for Android and iPhone is exactly the same as on the BlackBerry OS 10.

After fixing the issues, BlackBerry will once again start a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone. The company hasn't shared any timeline for the new roll-out.

Too Late ?? - Blackberry Messenger Now On Iphone n Android

BlackBerry's popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) instant chat application will be available for Google's Android and Apple's iPhone this weekend, the company said.

Rumours about the app coming to Android and iPhone started in June. The app will be available for devices running Android 4.0 and up, or iOS 6 and iOS 7. It will allow Android and iOS users to communicate with BlackBerry owners.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is a proprietary Internet-based instant messenger and videotelephony application included on BlackBerry devices that allows messaging (and videocalls for BlackBerry 10 smartphones) between BlackBerry users. BBM currently has more than 60 million monthly active customers on BlackBerry alone, and the overwhelming majority use BBM an average of 90 minutes per day.

The news comes in the wake of other rumours that Blackberry could fire 40% of its staff. This comes at a time that the company is suffering heavy losses from its failed PlayBook tablet and a fading popularity in the smartphone market.

BBM for Android and iPhone features:

BBM Chat – Enjoy real, immediate conversations with friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Not only does BBM let you know that your message has been delivered and read, it also shows you that your friend is responding to the message.

More than chat – With BBM you can share files on your phone such as photos and voice notes, all in an instant.

Keep your group in the loop – Multi-person chats are a great way to invite contacts to chat together. BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together, and go a step further than multi-chat by sharing photos and schedules. And, with Broadcast Message, you can send a message out to all your BBM contacts at once.

Post Updates and stay in the know – BBM lets you post a personal message, profile picture and your current status, and lets your contacts know instantly in Updates.

Your unique PIN – Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains your privacy, so you don’t have to give out your phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.

Availability: BBM will be available as a free download for Android smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) beginning at 7AM EDT on September 21. BBM for iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will become available for each market on the App Store schedule of 12:01 AM local time on September 22.

You can donwload the app from the BBM website: www.bbm.com
