An Effective Remedy For Low Sugar Level In Newborns - Sugar Gel

Melbourne: A cheap and easy-to-administer ‘sugar gel’ can help prevent brain damage in newborns with low blood sugar levels, scientists have found.

Low blood sugar or neonatal hypoglycaemia is a common problem that affects up to 15 per cent of otherwise healthy babies and is a preventable cause of brain damage, said Professor Jane Harding from the University of Auckland.

In a study, researchers at the University’s Liggins Institute and at Waikato Women’s Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand, assessed whether treatment with dextrose gel, an oral glucose gel, is more effective than feeding alone at reversing neonatal hypoglycaemia in at-risk babies (eg, from pregnancies complicated by maternal diabetes, preterm birth, and low birthweight).

“Our study is the first report in babies showing that dextrose gel massaged into the inside of the cheek is more effective than feeding alone for treating hypoglycaemia, and is safe and simple to use,” said Harding.

Dextrose gel is already used to reverse hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes, but little evidence exists for its use in babies.

Currently, treatment for late preterm and term babies involves extra feeding and repeated blood tests to measure blood sugar levels. But many babies are admitted to intensive care and given intravenous glucose because their blood sugar remains low.

In the study, between 2008 and 2010, 514 at-risk babies aged 35 weeks gestation or older from Waikato Women’s Hospital in Hamilton were enrolled in the first 48 hours after birth.

Around 242 (47 per cent) became hypoglycaemic and were randomly assigned to 40 per cent dextrose gel or placebo gel for up to six doses over 48 hours.

Treatment with dextrose almost halved the likelihood of treatment failure compared with placebo, with no adverse effects.

Babies given dextrose gel were also less likely to be admitted to intensive care for hypoglycaemia, to receive additional formula feeds, and to be formula fed at two weeks.

“Because this treatment is inexpensive and simple to administer, it should be considered for first-line management of late preterm and term hypoglycaemic babies in the first 48 hours after birth,” Harding said.

“Dextrose gel can easily be made in the hospital pharmacy, and is stable at room temperature. Therefore, the gel could also be useful in resource-poor settings where hypoglycaemia is common and underdiagnosed,” she said.

The study was published in the The Lancet journal.

There is someone in my life - Vidya

It has been a open secret when Vidya Balan started dating the UTV huncho Siddharth Roy Kapoor. The two had been spotted on vacations and has always been seen together. But till date there hasn't been a open admission by either of the two with regard to the relationship, but it seems that it is just about time. Vidya Balan has come foreward to show up the world that she is not single anymore and has with a classic smile of hers admitted her relationship with Siddharth. But again, she says she hasn't planned anything yet, its just a relationship that she is taking seriously.

"I don't have any plans yet... and there is no engagement ring yet. It's a while away and I am in no hurry. But it's on my mind and there is a plan at some point. There is someone in my life," Vidya told PTI.

When the media did push her against the wall about the who the someone was, and when they asked her to name if it was Siddharth Roy Kapoor, then she says "I will admit that I am dating him but not beyond that." giggled Vidya avoiding further being questioned on the topic. Vidya was at the promotions for Indian Film Festival to be held at Melbourne, where she is a special invitee and is appointed the Bollywood Ambassador of Victoria. 

The 34 year old has been receiving warm appreciations for her roles in Kahaani and The Dirty Picture and also shares a special status in the fraternity. She is although humble about her achievements and says that she doesn't want to be in unmeaningful competitions. This was evident when the media questioned her about Rakhi Sawant's comments about the movie 'The Dirty Picture' which Rakhi will be doing in a South Indian movie. 

"I did my best and I am sure if she (Rakhi) brings her own originality to the portrayal of Silk, it will be great and I will be more than happy to watch her." Says Vidya. She adds that portraying Silk on screen was her greatest achievement and she got her best compliment for the role from her father.  "I was finally relieved after my father came during the interval and said that he could only see Silk rather than Vidya. There is no bigger compliment for me than that," she said.

Indian film festival to be launched by Vidya Balan

The National Award winning actress Vidya Balan will launch Indian Film Festival in Melbourne. She has been chosen as the ambassador for the Indian Film Festival which will be held in Melbourne from 11th June 2012 to 22nd June 2012.

Vidya Balan said that, "I am very honoured to be an ambassador for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne which has done so much to spread the word about the vibrancy of Indian cinema in Australia. I love the format of the festival and the wide range of films screened. It not only showcases the best of Indian cinema but also provides a platform for young upcoming film makers through its short film competition. When I was in Melbourne I was smitten by the city, its love for films from all parts of the world and its multicultural spirit, and I am sure the Indian Film Festival will contribute greatly to add to that spirit".

Vidya will be in Melbourne on the 11th and 12th of May to promote the festival.

Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will have the launch of its festival programme by Vidya on Friday 11th May, 2012, at The Investment Centre, Collins St at 10.00 am.

On Saturday 12th May, she will be at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, presenting the match ball to umpires in the middle of the MCG prior to the Richmond vs Sydney match. It is said that she is the first Indian to have the honor of doing this.

Vidya named Brand Ambassador for VIFF, Melbourne

Vidya Balan will fly to Melbourne, by mid-2012 to be the face of Victoria's Indian Film Festival held there. She has been named as the brand ambassador for the event and it is an extreme honor and privilege for the actress to be named as one. She was all happy to be the part of the festival and she says; 

"I am delighted to be named as the brand ambassador for the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne. I love the format of the festival and the wide range of films screened,"
