Facebook's Android App Is Malicious, Reads SMS - Kaspersky

Not surprising for facebook, we had seen cookies tracking the activity of facebook users. But this one is on mobile where facebook intends to read your SMS using their app for mobile! This is now considered a great breach to privacy and the issue has been confirmed by Kaspersky Labs as well.

Facebook Reads Text Messages
facebook's breach into privacy : Photo courtesy : ientry.com

“Over the last few days there has been a constant scrutiny over Facebook having access to your SMS. Buried within the latest update for Facebook’s Android app is a feature that is causing growing concern among some users,” Kaspersky said in a statement today. The social media’s logic behind seeking access to SMS is that if you add a phone number to your account, this allows them to confirm your the number automatically by finding the confirmation code within a text message. This is the same technique used by various apps, including Whatsapp to verify your phone number at the time of installation.

The updated Facebook application now wants to read calendar events plus confidential information which it justifies as it is required to allow the app to show your calendar availability (based on your phone’s calendar) when you’re viewing an event on Facebook.  “Two-factor authentication provides an extra level of security, so it’s good to see Facebook providing this option … As a final note, we’d urge people to carefully check the permissions requested by any app when you first install it,” Kaspersky Lab’s Principal Security Researcher David Emm said. Kaspersky added the permissions also grants access to multimedia messages, for which reason is not explicitly given.

Kaspersky mentions that Android still has control over how the permissions of the app are dealt. But the increasing encroachments on to privacy of users seems to be a concern. In response to the issue, facebook mentioned on the website :  “Keep in mind that Android controls the way the permissions are named, and the way they’re named doesn’t necessarily reflect the way the Facebook app uses them. We realise that some of these permissions sound scary, so we’d like to provide more info about how we use them.”

So how many will be removing the facebook app from their phones? Please note that this is only part of the latest update on facebook App.

You can find the detailed explanation from Facebook at : https://www.facebook.com/help/210676372433246

We are happy, facebook for taking time to write this out, but this will no way justify the need to read text!

Facebook About To Add 'Sympathize' Button, Also Plans For Adding 'Dislike'

So it is!! facebook has finally decided to bring in a new button to its otherwise 'complete' set of social emotions. The sympathize button is about to be launched and the facebook spokesman has mentioned Huffington Post that this is happening soon.

It was only until recent hackathon by facebook that this idea was developed. Most of the media and bloggers are still in a shock with this announcement but it will make sense as of any earlier facebook changes. They hated the timeline when it arrived and now its a must and a better way to go through your friends history.

We all agree to the fact that adding a 'like' for a sad news doesn't feel appropriate. Although many feel that when you like a sad post you are actually supporting the person who made the post and giving him a hand in his grief. So from now on you dont need to add in the like count, instead whenever the sad news is broken out, the like button will be replaced by the sympathize button - atleast this is what we are reading from valid sources.

However stupid it sounds, the sympathize button has already created the roar and it is gathering much attention than usual. Also a good part is that there is plans for introducing a 'dislike' button, that should be a good one though.

However we will have to wait atleast till mid of next year to see any of these changes as facebook has clarified that this is very early stage to confirm any of the changes.

Facebook Lifts Limits For Teenage Users

Facebook lifts the limits it had set for younger or teenage users. The latest update from the social media site says that there will be no limit for posts and shares for teenage users from now. This news has come out as a boon to millions of young users who were finding it difficult with the limits turned on.

The recent statement from Facebook came saying "Teens are among the savviest people using of social media, and whether it comes to civic engagement, activism, or their thoughts on a new movie, they want to be heard,"

"While only a small fraction of teens using Facebook might choose to post publicly, this update now gives them the choice to share more broadly, just like on other social media services," the company said.

The competition for social media sites is bringing down facebooks otherwise ethical decision to limit the count of posts from people under the age of 18. Again they are not moving away from the policy and teens will be allowed to post only to a smaller group more frequently. Although they will have the option to choose to publish the data in "public" but there will be a warning displayed for the first few times of use.

US Federal Trade Commission To Investigate Facebook Tag Suggest Feature

US officials will examine changes to Facebook Inc's privacy policy to determine whether they violate a 2011 agreement with federal regulators, a Federal Trade Commission spokesman confirmed Wednesday after certain changes drew fire from privacy advocates.

Much of the criticism has focused on a proposed "Tag Suggest" feature that would use facial recognition technology to match faces in photos with public profile features, part of a broad set of privacy changes the social networking giant announced on August 29.

FTC spokesman Peter Kaplan said regulators would study the changes as part of the government's oversight of Facebook's privacy practices, which began in 2011 after Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg apologized for privacy missteps and pledged to obtain users' permission before sharing their personal data.

"As in all cases, we're monitoring compliance with the order and part of that involves interacting with Facebook," Kaplan said Wednesday.

He added that the commission had no reason to believe that the company had violated its 2011 agreement.

Facebook posted an update to its data use policies on the company website on August 29 to explain how users' personal information is used by advertisers and third-party applications.

The new policy proposal came days after the company finalized a $20 million class-action settlement related to how Facebook displayed its users' "likes" and pictures in its ads products.

Facebook said in a statement on Wednesday that it was in full compliance with the FTC and that its new policy did not grant the company expanded privileges in how it used personal data.

5 things you should never share on facebook!

The social media has become an integral part of everyday life but users need to be aware of what and how much they share on sites like Facebook which might be used by malicious hackers.

Those users who use the name of their pets as password for their social media account should try and avoid revealing it online and a recent research by Google indicated that 1 in 6 people use their pet’s name as password.

Another of such social media shares which make a strict no-no is one’s mother’s maiden name, which is a security question asked by a bank and users who have their family added in their social media account should keep their privacy settings high in order to avoid any hacking, metro.co.uk reports.

Apart from mother’s maiden name, security question related to first school attended can also be used as a potential tool for hacking into one’s account.

The report said that revealing one’s birth date is equally sensitive to be put online and if someone wants to reveal, they shouldn’t mention the year.

Next comes announcing the web world about one’s trip out of town or display of expensive things which might be of interest to robbers or an active GPS.

Indian Engineer Gets $12.5k Bounty From Facebook

Facebook had a security bug that could be exploited to delete any image on the social networking site posted by anyone, without the original poster's knowledge and approval.

Interestingly, an Indian electronics and communications engineer, Arul Kumar, discovered this vulnerability and shared it with Facebook under its Whitehat bug reporting program, winning a $12,500 bounty in the process.

The 21-year old engineer from Tamil Nadu, discovered that the mobile version of Facebook's Support Dashboard, which allows users to flag and report a picture for removal, could be exploited to remove any photograph posted by any Facebook user.

When a user sends a photo removal request through the Support Dashboard, usually Facebook takes a look and decides if it should be removed or not. If Facebook decides not to remove it, then the user has the option of sending a message to the user who has posted the picture with a request to remove the same picture. The request also contains a link, clicking on which leads to the removal of the photo.

Kumar discovered that while sending a removal request, a user can manually modify the Photo_id and the photo owner's Profile_id parameters, following which the photo removal link can be sent to one's own Facebook ID and used to delete the photo without the original uploader's knowledge. Using the same method, any picture on Facebook could be deleted without the involvement of the user who originally posted the picture.

As per Kumar, the same exploit could have been used for removing photos posted by even verified users, fan pages and groups and from status updates, photo albums, suggested posts and comments.
When Kumar first shared the vulnerability with Facebook, it was dismissed, with the Facebook security team unable to delete any pictures through the suggested hack. Following this, Kumar sent Facebook a proof of concept video demonstrating the bug through a dummy account. The second attempt was fruitful and the Facebook security team was able to see the vulnerability.

Facebook Face Recognition, Does this answer all privacy concerns?

A German privacy regulator is astonished that Facebook has added facial recognition to a proposed new privacy policy it published on Thursday.

"It is astonishing to find the facial recognition again in the new proposed privacy policy that Facebook published yesterday. We therefore have directly tried to contact officials from Facebook to find out if there is really a change in their data protection policy or if it is just a mistake of translation," Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar said in an email on Friday.

The Hamburg data protection commissioner, already at odds with Facebook over its use of face recognition technology, reopened its proceedings against the company in August last year, telling the company to either obtain explicit consent for face recognition from users, delete the data, or face a lawsuit, Caspar said at the time.

Facebook turned off facial recognition for all European users in September last year, and said it would delete all face recognition templates for existing users in Europe.

The German commissioner stopped its proceedings against Facebook in February, when it confirmed that the company had deleted the facial recognition data gathered on German users without their consent.

Facebook Hacker Khalil Receives $12K from Online Donors

The GoFundMe campaign has raised $11,741 for Khalil Shreateh, of Palestine, who claims he was forced to hack into Zuckerberg's page to bring attention to the security vulnerability because Facebook had ignored his earlier warnings.

The hacker who broke into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Timeline to expose a security lapse will be awarded nearly $12,000 from an online crowdsourced campaign.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised $11,741 for Khalil Shreateh, of Palestine, who claims he was forced to hack into Zuckerberg's page to bring attention to the security vulnerability because Facebook had ignored his earlier warnings.

The bug that Shreateh found allowed him to post on the Timelines of people who weren't his Facebook friends.

The reward for his work was arranged by Marc Maiffret, the chief technology officer of security firm BeyondTrust.

'Khalil Shreateh found a vulnerability in Facebook.com and, due to miscommunication, was not awarded a bounty for his work,' Maiffret wrote on the GoFundMe campaign page. 'Let us all send a message to security researchers across the world and say that we appreciate the efforts they make for the good of everyone.'

Facebook has a 'Bug Bounty' program that pays out at least $500 to hackers who bring software bugs to the company's attention. But the company said Shreateh would not qualify for a reward because he tested the bug against another user.

Joe Sullivan, Facebook's Chief Security Officer, explained the company's decision in a post online.

'We will not change our practice of refusing to pay rewards to researchers who have tested vulnerabilities against real users,' he wrote. 'It is never acceptable to compromise the security or privacy of other people. In this case, the researcher could have sent a more detailed report (like the video he later published), and he could have used one of our test accounts to confirm the bug.'

Shreateh first contacted the Facebook security team after proving the glitch was real by writing on the wall of a friend of the Facebook founder.

But instead of thanking him and fixing the issue, Facebook said it wasn’t a bug.

‘My name is Khalil Shreateh. I finished school with B.A degree in Information Systems . I would like to report a bug in your main site (www.facebook.com) which i discovered it...The bug allow Facebook users to share links to other facebook users , I tested it on Sarah.Goodin wall and I got success post.’

Shreateh, whose first language is Arabic, lives in Palestine and is in no way connected with Zuckerberg’s fellow Harvard alum Goodin. He hoped his ability to post to her page, nonetheless, would help prove his case to Facebook security.

However, instead of repairing the obvious security breach, Facebook replied to Shreateh by saying the issue ‘was not a bug.’

Undeterred, Shreateh used the glitch to hack his way onto Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page.

‘Sorry for breaking your privacy,’ he wrote in a since removed post to Zuckerberg, ‘I had no other choice…after all the reports I sent to Facebook team.’

Shreateh went on to recount his attempts to warn the website and posted a grab of the post on his blog.

Minutes later, his pleas were answered. Facebook contacted him demanding to know how he’d hacked their bosses personal page.

‘We fixed this bug on Thursday,’ wrote Matt Jones from Facebook’s security team in a Saturday post on Hacker News.

Facebook has a bounty program designed to bribe hackers into reporting glitches they find rather than exploiting them. Such validated reports are worth $500.

Salman Khan - The facebook Mania

328931_($6 Payout) Save 62% on a 8.75x11 Hardcover Photobook 336x280
When Amitabh Bachchan had joined the facebook gang, it was stirring up the fans and each second was awarded with thousand fans and it stands now with a 2.3 million fans for his page. But when the tiger decided to take on facebook, the scene was much different. We are talking about Salman Khan, who recently joined facebook and he currently is roaring loud over the internet. He has reached a fanbase of 2.6 million very close to Shahrukh Khan who now rules with the 2.8 million fans over facebook. The aim of Salman will ofcourse be close to his buddy Aamir Khan who is having the ultimate count of 5.2 million and counting.

Salman Khan has been quite active on facebook since his entry and has been adding his older and new photos in sequence. One can really feel the timeline happening. Salman had tweeted about his entry to facebook in his own style ""Jitne fake pages hain woh ya toh woh join kar le is page ko or kya kahun main? 'Fake off' (So all the fake pages either just join this page or, what can I say, fake off).

"We are opening Being Human stores all over India starting October," he added.

And since his hits are counting on, there is no doubt that when we report this news tomorrow he would have already crossed 4 million likes on his page. The fame for Salman Khan is at an all-time high. He has been having back to back hits since Wanted(2009) and almost all of them except Wanted covered a gross of Rs.100 crore. That is some effort from the star and that is how the fans have been accepting the ultimate action star.

Although this success and fame does come at a cost. Recently Salman Khan found himself vulnerable at Lucknow and was not able to continue shooting. This was for his brother's movie Dabaang 2, it was decided that Lucknow will be the arena for the climax shots and hearing the news a vast crowd had gathered to join Salman Khan and to meet him and this made the situation vulnerable and the shoot was cancelled. It is now decided that Salman Khan will directly come on to Satara.

There is also reports that Salman Khan has doubled his personal security for the same reasons. Salman's head of security Shera confirmed that the security deployed for the actor has indeed been beefed up by 100 per cent. "Earlier, Bhai had six bouncers around him. Now, he has twelve," he said.

Arbaaz had also told the media, "It's been chaotic here. We didn't bring Salman. He will now join us directly at Satara for the shooting of the climax. But the people here gathered in hordes for the shooting in the outdoors probably in the hope that Salman would turn up. And when he didn't, they got restless." speaking about the Lucknow shoots.

Another incident which resulted in beefing up the security happened around Eid, "We had a tough time outside Bhai's residence on Eid. The fans went out of control and the cops had to resort to lathi charge," Shera, the man who has been closest to Salman for the last 15 years told TOI.

So the love is going on to increase and so is the chaos - its a small price to pay for the love he gets from his fans.

Manisha Koirala ends her two year old marriage

384529_Take Flight with our Aviator Eyewear!
The Bollywood actress has ended her marriage with Nepali businessman Samrat Dalal after filing for divorce early this year in January.

The 41 year old actress tied the knot two years ago on June 19, 2010, in a traditional Nepali ceremony held in Kathmandu. They had met through the online social networking website,
Facebook and had immediately fallen in love with each other. The couple had spent their honeymoon in Finland. When all seemed hunky dory, just six months after their marriage Manisha posted on Facebook that she wanted to divorce her husband and said that he has become her worst enemy. Later she cleared the reports and said she had commented in the fit of rage.

But things didn’t get better and Manisha decided to file for divorce in 2012. She has been in Mumbai since January this year and even tried the Oneness University in Chennai to help her marriage. However, it didn't help to bring the couple back together.

Rumours say that she threw a party for her friends at her place after breaking up with Samrat to enjoy her newly found freedom.

Before Samrat the Khamoshi actress was reportedly engaged in 2001 to Crispin Conroy, the former Australian ambassador to Nepal, but they broke up later. There were also reports of her dating American speaker and author, Christopher Dorris, but that relationship also ended.

Manisha who was well known for her outstanding roles in movies like Bombay, 1942- A Love Story, Dil Se, Khamoshi was last seen as Rubina in I AM which was directed by Onir.

Manisha is also hoping to get back to films. She was also recently spotted at the special screening of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda. It is said that she has signed three films and will be soon seen in Ram Gopal Verma’s Bhoot 2. All the best Manisha for your second innings in Bollywood!

Poonam Pandey Back with teasers

384529_Take Flight with our Aviator Eyewear!
We have said it before and we are sharing this again and that is the fact that if you want to pick on any celebrity who is used the modern technology and social media to its full, it will be undoubtedly Poonam Pandey. The just another model turned her image over to the hottest model in town with twitter and she even bagged herself a role in movie with these skin shows.

Unending and unrestricted skin shows are the media that Poonam Pandey has chosen for herself and she still keeps restrictions to limit her from being the Playboy model (yet!).

Poonam has ensured that her skin shows does keep up in news and for this she has utilized both Facebook and twitter to its best. And the just when her shoots are coming to an end, she has decided to post in more teasers of herself and remind people that they have more to see of her, when everyone thought that they just needed to see few strings off.

Poonam has now decided to describe a tale through her pics and how she finds her 'accessories' worth and better for herself. Its kind of cheap to talk about but when it comes to publicity - everything that makes your famous is included, be it the under-wear down pose or the topless one! As long as it works she is happy about it.

Challenging her fans to find a better hottie show than herself and to discuss with them how she found herself awkward in schooldays and what changed now is quite B-grade of publicity but again, it seems to have worked on her - as more people are keeping the hits on http://twitter.com/ipoonampandey!

We find only one reason for Poonam to be starting with this skin show - it is Sherlyn Chopra, when Poonam had started her twitter run - there was literally no competitors to her and she ruled herself as the most downloaded model on the internet. But Sherlyn just needed few lesser tweets to change the charts and become the number one in skin show as Sherlyn did show up for Playboy shoots (news here) which is something which Poonam is still to do or waiting or may be not

Also with hotties like Sunny Leone in the league it has become a necessity to survive the competition and keep her fame live longer through the periods!

He says "I felt that this could be an interesting yet fun way to let people have their personal dose of action and adventure,"

There will also be a social game called "Don - The Social Mobsters Game", which will be launched on the Facebook and is being developed by Mango Games.

The game will be available on Android, iOS, and PSN for PS3 platforms. While the game on Android and iOS will be released along with the movie, the console version of the game will be released in March next year. "This is the first time a game is based on an Indian film that will be launched on four platforms. When I saw the creative of the game, I was very excited because the visuals were as real as the characters in the film.
