BMW 4-Series Launched In LAX Auto Show 2013

BMW revealed the 4-Series Convertible to the public at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. It will be replacing the 3-Series Convertible. The open-top four-seater stands out significantly from the mid-range models of the 3-Series. In terms of looks, the 4-Series Convertible is more refined and resembles the 4-Series Coupe the only exception being the folding metal roof which needs 20 seconds to open or close. This procedure is done at speeds of up to 11 mph (18 km/h). The car can be driven with the top down even at lower temperatures thanks to the neck warmers.

The cargo area has increased by 20 liters (0.7 cu. ft.) to 370 liters (13 cu. ft.) when the top is up and once it’s folded down the capacity drops to 220 liters (7.8 cu. ft.) which should suffice for short journeys. The U.S.-spec model will be available in a 428i variant and powered by a 2.0-L 4-cylinder turbo which generates 240 bhp (179 kW) and 255 lb-ft (345 Nm). The 435i on the other hand is equipped with a 3.0-L inline-six which produces 300 bhp (224 kW) and 300 lb-ft (406 kW). The two engines are coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission featuring Normal and Sport modes. An xDrive system can be optionally added to the 428i version.

In Europe, BMW will also offer a 420d which is powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.0-L turbodiesel producing 181 bhp (135 kW). The Euro-spec 4-Series Convertible comes as standard with a six-speed manual but for more money the engines can be connected to the aforementioned 8-speed auto ‘box. The 2014 BMW 4-Series Convertible will reach dealerships in the United States in the first quarter of 2014 at a starting price of 49,675 USD for the base 428i model. The more powerful 435i can be had from 55,825 USD.

The market size is very small for cars like Z4, roughly about 500 units every year. But we are not looking for numbers. It is a very special product and very important for BMW as a brand value."
