Nelson Mandela Moves Out Of Hospital, Spends First Night At Home

The former South African president, 95, was admitted in early June for a recurring lung infection.

Family members have spoken of their happiness at having Mr Mandela home again after nearly three months.

However the South African government has said his condition remains critical and can sometimes be unstable.

Mr Mandela returned home by ambulance early on Sunday and would continue to receive intensive care there, a statement from the South African presidency said.

His suburban house in the suburb of Houghton has been "reconfigured" for his care.

However, the presidency said he would be readmitted to hospital should his condition warrant it.

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge in Johannesburg says all this seems designed to reassure not just the Mandela family but the nation, too, that he should be no more vulnerable when his condition is unstable than he was in hospital in Pretoria.
Fortitude and grace

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is revered around the world for leading the fight against white minority rule and preaching reconciliation with the white community despite being imprisoned for 27 years.

Despite his various illnesses, the statement from Mr Zuma's office notes, the former president displayed "immense grace and fortitude".

The South African government has released few details about his condition, appealing for Mr Mandela's privacy and dignity to be respected.

The BBC's Andrew Harding in South Africa says this is not the discharge of a man who has made a significant recovery but the transfer of a patient from an intensive care ward in a hospital to a specially-built intensive care unit in his own home, presumably in line with his family's wishes.

But he notes that some people will take encouragement from the fact that his doctors have said he was fit enough to make the 55km-journey (34 miles) and says such a decision will not have been taken lightly.

"It is a day of celebration for us, that he is finally back home with us," said his grandson, Mandla Mandela.

Mr Mandela's lung condition is said to result from the tuberculosis he contracted during the 27 years he spent in prison for taking up arms against white minority rule.

He has been admitted to hospital four times in the past year and his latest stay lasted 84 days.

The very first of action heroes in Hindi films, Dara Singh, 83, was admitted to hospital on Saturday around 5pm following cardiac problem. The former wrestler turned actor is much dear to his fans for the various movies and especially the portrayal of Lord Hanuman in Dayanand Sagar's Ramayan serial. The condition of the actor is said to be critical and the medics are keeping a close watch on the actor.

"Daraji has been suffering from nerve related disorder that has gradually made him rather weak over the years. Today, he suffered a stroke or a clot and is now critical. He will be kept under observation for at least 24 hours. Though he is being treated by great doctors, prayers are needed," his son Vindoo Dara Singh told the media following the actor's hospitalisation.

Dara Singh had trended Hindi cinemas during 1960's and had many action flicks which did extremely well at the box office. Dara became famous as the first ever action hero of Hindi cinema with films like King Kong, Faulad, Samson, Hercules, Tarzan Comes To Delhi and Sher Dil in the 1960s. He was last seen in Jab We Met, the directorial from Imtiaz Ali.

Interestingly, few actresses in those days wanted to be cast opposite the wrestler-turned-actor. And thus, Dara Singh discovered Mumtaz. They worked together in as many as 16 films and became close family friends. In fact, Mumtaz's sister Mallika married Singh's brother Randhawa. They have a son Shaad.

When asked about the actor's health on Sunday afternoon, Shaad said, "He is critical. But is showing signs of improvement. Please pray for him."

There were many celebrities coming into the hospital by Sunday and Vindoo also confirmed that his health is now getting better, speaking to TOI he says "He's under observation in ICU. The team of doctors is constantly monitoring his health. My dad will soon be fine." Vindoo is very much attached to his dad.

We pray for the health of our dear Dara Singh!

Big B Recovers

After the second surgery, it seems to be all well at Bachchan house, as Amitabh Bachchan earlier tweeted "Looks like a few more days... before they set me free... but recovery at home will be another few months,"

"Getting independent gradually... a careful shower avoiding the cuts and needles and 'kites'... pretty dexterous exercise," he wrote. Big B had undergone the first abdominal surgery on February 11, 2012, which was marked to be a minor surgery and was to be released soon, but following the acute pain after surgery, he was taken back to the operation theater.

Earlier the news was that Amit ji will be released within a day or two but this has been ruled out and will take few more weeks before he heads back. He says "The meetings of the morning with the team of doctors... happy to note that they seemed satisfied with the progress and after a few closed door discussions, came back with a few points that would bring relief to any sufferer," on his latest blog post.

The surgery was following the abdominal ailments he was suffering since the days of 'Coolie', in 1982.
