Sensex Hits 20k And Drops 116 Points


MUMBAI: The S&P BSE benchmark sensex on Thursday dropped 116 points in late morning trade after hitting the 20,000 level after fresh selling in banking, auto, IT, tech and metal stocks.

The BSE 30-share barometer sensex opened higher at 20,046.05 points and advanced further to 20,052.05 on initial buying in view of persistent foreign capital inflows.


However, it declined afterwards to 19,834.17 before quoting 19,881.04 points at 1030 hours, showing a loss of 116.41 points or 0.58 per cent from its last close.

The NSE 50-share index Nifty also moved down by 39.50 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 5,873.65 at 10.30am.

Major losers were — Hero Motocorp (2.91%), Sesa Goa (2.36%), HDFC Bank (2.25%), ICICI Bank (1.94%), HUL (1.72%), Hindalco (1.57%) and M&M (1.33%).

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 586.50 crore on Wednesday, as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.

Most Asian stock markets saw modest gains in their early trade with energy stocks offering a bright spot after an increase for oil futures, though Japanese shares lagged.

Key benchmark indices in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Singapore rose by 0.05 to 0.6 per cent while indices in Indonesia and Japan fell by 0.26 to 0.47 per cent.

Rupee Falls To 68 Against USD, Sensex down by 500


MUMBAI: ​The BSE sensex on Tuesday tumbled nearly 559 points on fund outflows as rupee dips below 68 per dollar.

Earlier, the sensex plunged by 390.10 points, or 2.2% to 18,496.03 with all the sectoral indices losing up to 2.67%.


Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty dropped by 129.20 points, or 2.3% to 5,421.55 driven by stocks of HDFC, ITC and RIL.

Brokers said investors confidence remained jittery as the rupee again dipped below 67 per dollar, raising fears of widening fiscal deficit.

They said funds were also active and booked profits following four sessions of gain in front-runner stocks.

The heaviest on the benchmark with their nearly 20% weightage - Reliance Industries plunged 3.93% to Rs 849 and ITC by 2.79% to Rs 310.50. The HDFC, also a index kitty stock, dropped by 4.21% to Rs 704.75.

Market : Sensex goes back on 19000 as market opens with 293pts up.


The BSE benchmark Sensex on Friday regained 19,000 level by spurting 293 points in early trade, led by rally in oil and gas sector stocks after the government approved near doubling of natural gas prices to $8.4 from April 1, 2014.

The 30-share barometer surged by 292.94 points, or 1.55%, to 19,168.89 with oil and gas, auto and metal sectoral indices leading the rally. The index had gained 323.83 points in the previous session.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty regained 5,70 points by rising 88.65 points, or 1.56%, to 5,773.45.

Brokers said sentiments turned better after the government on day approved nearly doubling of natural gas prices to $8.4, triggering buying in oil gas sector stocks.

Besides a firming trend in the Asian region following overnight gains at the US markets too fuelled the rally on the domestic bourses here.

The Oil and gas sector index rose the most by gaining 4.12% to 8,965.63 as stocks of ONGC up by 5.62% to Rs. 338.55, Reliance Industries by 3.74% to Rs. 861.55 and Oil India by 2.79% to Rs. 589 and Cairn India by 2.33% to Rs. 294.70.

Meanwhile in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose by 0.77%, while Japan's Nikkei gained 3.29% in the early trade. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.77% higher in on Thursday's trade.
