Egypt officials defend crackdown on pro-Morsi camps : International Desk

Egypt's interim PM Hazem Beblawi has defended the deadly operation to break up protest camps in Cairo, saying the authorities had to restore security.

Egypt's interim PM Hazem Beblawi has defended the deadly operation to break up protest camps in Cairo, saying the authorities had to restore security.

Mr Beblawi said it was not an easy decision to disperse the supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

The government, which has declared a state of emergency, said 235 civilians had been killed nationwide.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which backed the protests, says more than 2,000 people have died in the violence.

Correspondents in Cairo also report seeing many dead, but figures differ widely and have been impossible to verify independently.

Police have now taken control of the camps in the capital and are reported to have arrested key Brotherhood leaders.

Police 'professional'

In a televised address, Mr Beblawi expressed regret for the loss of life and said the state of national emergency would be lifted as soon as possible.

The measure, scheduled to last for a month, imposes a curfew in Cairo and several other provinces between 19:00 local time (17:00 GMT) and 06:00.

Mr Beblawi also said police had been given instructions not to use weapons to disperse protesters.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said the police had "dealt professionally" with the protesters, and that 43 police personnel had been killed in violence across the country.

He accused the pro-Morsi protesters of building "fortifications" and "firing birdshot" at the police forces.

The protest sites had been infiltrated by armed gangs, he said, and ammunition had been seized from them.

Across the country, members of the Muslim Brotherhood had been arrested and were being interrogated, Mr Ibrahim said.

In the wake of the violence, Vice-President Mohammed ElBaradei has announced his resignation from the interim government.

Bradley Manning Apologizes at Court Martial, faces prison : International Desk

FORT MEADE, Md. — Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is facing up to 90 years in prison for leaking 700,000 government files to WikiLeaks, apologized on Wednesday for the “unintended consequences of my actions.” He told the judge at his court-martial trial that while he “believed it was going to help people, not hurt people,” he now realized that what he did was wrong.

“I’m sorry that my actions hurt people,” he said. “I’m sorry that they hurt the United States. At the time of my decision, as you know, I was dealing with a lot of issues, issues that are ongoing and continue to affect me” — a reference to matters like his crisis over his gender identity, which he was confronting while on a military deployment in a combat zone.

Throughout the case, open-government activists have celebrated Private Manning’s leaks as a heroic act to be admired and emulated even as his critics have denounced him as a traitor. And earlier in his court-martial, Private Manning’s defense lawyer, David E. Coombs, portrayed his client as a whistle-blower, even if a naïve one. But in the sentencing phase this week, Mr. Coombs has elicited testimony that depicted his client as a smaller, sadder figure — a damaged and confused young man whose decision-making capacity when he decided to leak the files was impaired by extraordinary stress.

In his statement, Private Manning said these personal issues did not justify the things he did.

“Although a considerable difficulty in my life,” he said, “ these issues are not an excuse for my actions. I understood what I was doing and the decisions I made. However, I did not fully appreciate the broader effects of my actions. Those factors are clear to me now.”

Private Manning’s three-minute statement to the judge, Col. Denise R. Lind, was not sworn, so prosecutors could not cross-examine him.

For much of the day, the defense sought to portray Private Manning in human terms, from a difficult childhood — starting with his mother’s heavy drinking while she was pregnant with him — to his mental and emotional deterioration while in Iraq.

Under questioning from Mr. Coombs, Capt. David Moulton, a clinical psychiatrist who extensively examined his client after his arrest, described the stress and isolation that Private Manning was under, and framed his release of the documents to WikiLeaks as the immature, even neurotic act of an idealist who thought he could end all wars.

Under such stress, Captain Moulton said, “his abnormal personality traits became more prominent — he was acting out his grandiose ideation, his difficulties during that post-adolescent period. And ultimately, when he came into contact or had contact with the information which he ended up releasing, his decision-making capacity at that point was influenced by the stress of his situation, for sure.”

He also said Private Manning exhibited traits of fetal alcohol syndrome and some of the social difficulties associated with Asperger’s syndrome, along with narcissistic tendencies like grandiosity and haughtiness which became heightened under duress.

Along with Captain Moulton, Private Manning’s older sister, Casey Major, and aunt, Debra Van Alstyne, testified that he had been underweight since birth because his mother drank and smoked during her pregnancy.

His sister, who is 11 years older, described a difficult childhood in which their alcoholic mother was largely dysfunctional and so Ms. Major largely cared for Private Manning from his birth until he was around 7, when she had a bitter dispute with their father and left home. Later their father left and their mother became suicidal. At one point Ms. Major teared up slightly while discussing photographs of their childhood...

News : 3 Shot to Death at Township Meeting in Pennsylvania

SAYLORSBURG, Pa. — A shooting during a township meeting Monday night left three people dead, and the gunman was tackled by a local official and shot with his own gun before being taken into custody, a witness said.

The shooting, which also wounded at least two other people, happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. during Ross Township’s regular monthly meeting, said Guy Miller, the Monroe County emergency management director. The gunman, who appeared to be “shooting randomly,” was in state police custody at a hospital, Mr. Miller said.

The state police in Lehighton, Pa., confirmed that three were dead and that the gunman had been captured, and said that he had a continuing dispute with township officials over the possible condemnation of his property. They said at about 15 to 18 residents and officials were at the meeting.

The Pocono Record said that one of its reporters was in the township building and that a man armed with a pistol with a scope shot through a wall into the meeting, in northeastern Pennsylvania about 85 miles north of Philadelphia.

The reporter, Chris Reber, told the newspaper that he saw holes open up in the wall, with smoke and plaster blowing out. He said he heard what sounded like automatic gunfire. “I ran out after the first round of shooting,” he said. “I dropped to the floor. That’s what everyone did.”

“Then it stopped and I crawled out the sidedoor,” Mr. Reber told the newspaper. “I was the only person who crawled out. Everyone got behind a table.” Mr. Reber said that a woman opened a door to the meeting room and that the gunman “was standing there. A man pushed her aside and was shot. People were shot inside the room.”...

News : Edward Snowden 'safe and fine', says lawyer

Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden was safe and felt fine after leaving the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, his lawyer said.

"He has reached his location. He feels fine and is completely safe," Xinhua quoted lawyer Anatoly Kucherena as telling Interfax news agency.

On Thursday, Snowden was granted a one-year permit to stay in Russia following a month-long confinement in the airport's transit area.

An official invitation will also be sent to Edward's father Lon Snowden to come to Moscow, Kucherena said Friday.

"We have prepared almost all the documents. Invitations are to be sent to Lon Snowden and his defence attorney on my behalf to come to Moscow," Kucherena said.

Kucherena said that due to security reasons the time "has not come yet" to disclose Snowden's location.

Also on Friday, US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul met presidential aide Yuri Ushakov to discuss the latest developments in bilateral relations and the status of Snowden, the US diplomatic mission said. "Michael McFaul and Yuri Ushakov discussed nuclear arms cuts, anti-missile defense, Syria, trade, human rights and the new status of Mr. Snowden," the US Embassy said on its Twitter account...

News : More Than 200 Escape From Pakistan Prison Attack

PESHAWAR — More than 200 prisoners escaped following a massive attack on one of the main prisons in northwestern Pakistan on Monday night, a senior security official said.

Authorities imposed a curfew in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, following an overnight attack on the 100-year-old central prison there, which housed more than 500 prisoners. All roads leading to neighboring restive tribal regions of North and South Waziristan were blocked off and a search operation has been launched, officials said, requesting they not be named.

“The attackers have melted away in the population,” one official acknolwledged.

More than 100 militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy arms rode in on motorbikes and vehicles and then blasted the prison walls and broke open locks on cells, freeing 243 prisoners including 30 militants, the security official said.

“They used megaphones to call names of their comrades in the lock-ups and then broke up their cells using explosives devices,” the official said.

Thirteen people were killed in the attack that began at around 11 p.m. and continued for three hours, the official said.

“There are explosives littered around the compound,” the official said.

Four policemen and five civilians were among the dead. Four prisoners who belonged to the minority Shia sect and had been charged in targeted killings were also identified and killed by militants, the official said. Another 13 people were wounded in the attack.

The attack was the second major prison raid in two years. In April last year, militants stormed a prison in neighbouring Bannu district, freeing nearly 400 prisoners...

News : Train Derailment in NW Spain; kills dozens

MADRID—A passenger train derailed Wednesday night on a curvy stretch of track in northwestern Spain, killing at least 40 people caught inside toppled cars and injuring at least 140 in the country's worst rail accident in decades, officials said.

A train traveling in northwestern Spain has derailed close to Santiago de Compostela.

Bodies were covered in blankets next to the tracks as rescue workers tried to get trapped people out of the train's cars. Some were pulled out of broken windows, and one man knelt atop a carriage lying on its side, using a pickax to try to break open a window. Images showed one car pointing up into the air with one of its ends twisted and disfigured. Another carriage that had been severed in two was lying on a road near the track.

Officials gave differing death tolls in the immediate aftermath of the crash just outside Santiago de Compostela, on the eve of the city's annual religious festival that attracts tens of thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the region of Galicia where Santiago de Compostela is the capital, said at least 40 people died. But the president of Galicia's main court, Miguel Angel Cadenas, was quoted from the scene by the Cadena Ser radio station saying 56 died. Rescue workers were still searching through the smoldering wreckage of the train's cars Thursday morning in the predawn darkness.

State-owned train operator Renfe said in a statement that 218 passengers and an unspecified number of staff were on board the eight-carriage train during the 8.41 p.m. crash on a section of tracks that came online two years ago.

Renfe and track operator Adif were collaborating with a judge who has been appointed to investigate the accident...
