Google's Android Smart Watch Leaked : Android Police

Androidpolice.com has created a wave as it is currently showing the leaked images of the famous Google smartwatch, which seems to have been the original concept of Google when it acquired Motorola before giving it to Lenovo. The images, as the website claims is seems to show the watch which was existent right from 2013!

The leaked images of Android watch - courtesy : Android Police

It's important to note that what we are looking at here is a prototype, not a finished product. The photos we have are of a model believed to exist in 2013. It is likely that, had this become a real product, consumers would have seen significant hardware and software differences. First, let's look at the photos.

says Androidpolice. The watch is a square dial as shown in the photos with a rubber wrist band. The rocker buttons are on the top of the screen and the bottom part includes a 'back' button. The display is shows 3Bit Mode apps which may be a indication of apps working in 8 color mode and will also have a slot for USB connection on the wrist band.

You can find a detailed report here at Android Police Website

Considering the takeover by Lenovo, it will be tough to estimate when the gadget will find itself on to global market.

Could the slicklogin acquisition mean demise of passwords?

The popular shopper, google Inc has gone shopping once again to Israel to pick up one of the unique login features introduced. As the developers say, it may sound insane at start, but slick login was a firm which used unique sounds which when played through the speakers of mobile phone or computer will allow the software to identify the person.

The homepage of slicklogin confirming the acquisition by Google

This is considered safe, mentioning that the sound is not audible to human ears and can only be picked up by the microphone or phone. With this acquisition, experts consider this as a demise of password and could very well replace the now used password security.

Although google has implemented the 2-step verification for free, the stick login feature will be a added security option.

SlickLogin announced the acquisition on its website but did not disclose how much the deal was worth.

'Today we`re announcing that the SlickLogin team is joining Google,' the statement read.

'[Google] shares our core beliefs that logging in should be easy instead of frustrating, and authentication should be effective without getting in the way.

Google has always had a soft spot for Israel and it was revealed with their recent acquisitions like speadsheet company iRows, LabPixies entertainment, and mapping service Waze.

We are just gazing at the stars on what or when this new authentication is going to come in effect!

Motorola one of the leaders during early stages of mobile phones had gone down to a near fall with the invasion of Chinese, Korean, Finnish and Indian mobile manufacturers entering the market. It failed to cope up with the growing pace. But Motorola has found a new life line with its google acquisition and even better may be in store as Google has handed this over to Lenovo.

With China's Lenovo having bought Motorola Mobility for $2.9 billion recently, industry observers say that the company may be playing safe by only launching online till integration of businesses happen and not expending its resources towards distribution, which is a must for any mobile phone company to survive in the hyper-competitive Indian market.

"There are too many players and original equipment makers (OEMs) in the Indian market and the distribution channels are fatigued with the large number of devices being retailed countrywide," said Jayanth Kolla, co-founder and partner at telecom research firm Convergence Catalyst.

Facebook's Android App Is Malicious, Reads SMS - Kaspersky

Not surprising for facebook, we had seen cookies tracking the activity of facebook users. But this one is on mobile where facebook intends to read your SMS using their app for mobile! This is now considered a great breach to privacy and the issue has been confirmed by Kaspersky Labs as well.

facebook's breach into privacy : Photo courtesy : ientry.com

“Over the last few days there has been a constant scrutiny over Facebook having access to your SMS. Buried within the latest update for Facebook’s Android app is a feature that is causing growing concern among some users,” Kaspersky said in a statement today. The social media’s logic behind seeking access to SMS is that if you add a phone number to your account, this allows them to confirm your the number automatically by finding the confirmation code within a text message. This is the same technique used by various apps, including Whatsapp to verify your phone number at the time of installation.

The updated Facebook application now wants to read calendar events plus confidential information which it justifies as it is required to allow the app to show your calendar availability (based on your phone’s calendar) when you’re viewing an event on Facebook.  “Two-factor authentication provides an extra level of security, so it’s good to see Facebook providing this option … As a final note, we’d urge people to carefully check the permissions requested by any app when you first install it,” Kaspersky Lab’s Principal Security Researcher David Emm said. Kaspersky added the permissions also grants access to multimedia messages, for which reason is not explicitly given.

Kaspersky mentions that Android still has control over how the permissions of the app are dealt. But the increasing encroachments on to privacy of users seems to be a concern. In response to the issue, facebook mentioned on the website :  “Keep in mind that Android controls the way the permissions are named, and the way they’re named doesn’t necessarily reflect the way the Facebook app uses them. We realise that some of these permissions sound scary, so we’d like to provide more info about how we use them.”

So how many will be removing the facebook app from their phones? Please note that this is only part of the latest update on facebook App.

You can find the detailed explanation from Facebook at : https://www.facebook.com/help/210676372433246

We are happy, facebook for taking time to write this out, but this will no way justify the need to read text!

FIN: A Ring Based Smart Controller From Kochi Startup

Kerala based startup firm, RHL vision has developed a new ring based gadget that communicates with more than devices and enabling users to control the devices using gestures. So you could be connecting this to your smartphone, bluetooth stereo or a tv with bluetooth support.

Fin a ring based smart controller for bluetooth enabled devices

The technology used by the ring, which is named as "FIN" by RHL vision is bluetooth and this will be the second of its kind to be announced. We had seen the Chennai based startup firm bringing up Smarty Rings which was a great hit and went about collecting $300,000 on Indiegogo campaign.

Check out Smarty Rings News here

“People in today’s world are becoming more busy, but still they are wasting a lot of time interacting with their smart devices,” Rohildev Nattukallingal, founder of the Kochi-based RHLVision Technologies, the startup behind Fin. “Fin removes this interaction gap by allowing users to quickly interact with those devices,” said Nattukallingal.

The ring currently is loaded with upto 5 usable gestures but is expandable to n numbers based on the softwares created on the devices it communicates with. The device can control the volume on a TV, and even lets users text or dial a number without touching their phone. The developers say they hope Fin can help people who are visually impaired.

Fin is a tiny hardware product that you can wear on the thumb of your hand as a ring and it will make your whole palm as a Gesture interface.

For instance, a person driving a car can use Fin as their key, or take phone calls or control the music player without taking their hands off the steering wheel; a smartphone user can rub their index finger against the thumb to zoom their screens in and out and they can assign numbers to different sections of their fingers, turn their hand into a numeric keypad and tap in a phone number without even touching the phone.Author: RHLvision
  Published: 21 January 2014

What differs from Smarty Rings is that it controls the devices whereas the smarty ring is more for notifications. Most of these smart rings use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or NFC to connect to devices around, but Fin will use Bluetooth dual-mode for compatibility with more devices. The advantage of using BLE is that devices will have very low power consumption, but in case of dual mode it might be slightly higher. The company claims that the battery should last for about a week after charging, but since it hasn’t disclosed the capacity of the battery it will be using in its final product, we’ll need to wait and see if the company can deliver on that front.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fin-wearable-ring-make-your-palm-as-numeric-keypad-and-gesture-interface

The company is trying to raise $100,000 via Indiegogo but has managed to raise only $20,157 till now. Samsung Note 3 Gadgets No Longer Supported In Android 4.4 Official Update!

Samsung Note 3 users, beware when you are updating your Samsung Note 3 as your devices like the smart cover or similar devices from third party installations may not work after the Android 4.4 update!

Samsung Galaxy Mega Showing 4.4 Update - courtesy: Ibtimes

According to Ars Technica, Samsung has acknowledged that the Android 4.4 update for the Galaxy Note 3 disables the support for some third party accessories.

Here's the full statement from Samsung: "We have currently identified a software compatibility issue with the Galaxy Note 3 update to Android 4.4 (KitKat) and select third-party accessories. A software update will be available shortly. We are committed to offering a diverse and reliable mobile experience for all customers, providing continued support and solutions for any issues that arise with product updates for both Samsung manufactured and third-party accessories."

Initially there were many complaints from users about the devices not communicating with its gadgets and counterparts. And these statements were denied by Samsung confirming that there is no 'correlation' between the Samsung Android 4.4 update and the incompatibility of gadgets.

You can still find complaints on the messaging boards and facebook about the recent incompatibility and users seems to be eagerly waiting on the patch for this issue. So if you are a Samsung Note 3 user, control your urge for update !

Earlier the Samsung's 4.3 update to other devices had caused an unrest when the battery usage was found to be higher than prior to update. This issue is yet to be acknowledged when Samsung is entering troubles with the Samsung Note 3 update.

We hope the patch gets released sooner.

Wearable Book : Now Feel The Emotions Of Characters In The Story!

Not a gimmick, the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) media lab has been able to create a wearable book which allows you to feel the emotions in which the characters travel as you unveil the story. The effort is made possible with a set of LED's and a wearable vest which is enabled with various sensors to make you feel the characters.

The Girl Who Was Plugged In - The New Book With Sensory and Mood Controls

The book, titled " The Girl Who Was Plugged In", is part of an MIT project called 'Sensory Fiction'.

There are a total of 150 LED's used in the book which illuminates according to the plot and what the story discusses. We are adding in a video which should demonstrate it better.

SENSORY FICTION from Felix on Vimeo.

The book uses a set of temperature controls along with this lighting to mimic the experiences of the characters in the book. The sensors doesn't stop there, it also has a straps installed on the vest which contains "heartbeat and shiver simulator", a body compression system, temperature controls and sound.

Sounds more like a science fiction movie!

"The Sensory Fiction author is provided with new means of conveying plot, mood and emotion while still allowing space for the reader's imagination," said the press release from MIT.

"These tools can be wielded to create an immersive storytelling experience tailored to the reader," it added.

For example, a fearful passage triggers the vest's body compression system to constrict and get tighter around the wearer's stomach and back.

Vibration patterns during exciting passages cause the heart rate to increase, while more sombre moments might trigger a soft, dark light.

The vest's localised body temperature control might heat up during a particularly embarrassing section, the release added.

It will be fun if the book does reach out to mass production sooner!

Nokia's Android Phone Specifications : LEAKED!

The exciting and most awaited of Nokia's releases, the android version of Nokia is down the road. The phone is allegedly named "normandy" has already created waves with the release of pictures and interfaces of the device. The recent news is that, before the official launch, the specifications of the device is leaked on to the internet!

The phone has 4-inch (854x480) display and is set to have dual Sim capability, a Qualcomm dual core 1 GHz Snapdragon 200 processor, 5 mega pixel rear camera and Android 4.4 KitKat. It also comes with 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded with the help of a microSD card. The company's first ever Android phone, officially named Nokia X, is slated to launch at a Nokia event on Feb. 24.

Nokia X will have a similar interface to other Nokia Lumia devices and will be in 6 colors

Nokia X or Normandy will be the first of android devices to be launched by Nokia, who had been steadily following Microsoft Windows Mobile OS for the previous set of phones. This doesn't mean that Nokia will be switching completely on to Android platform, it will continue with the MS Windows Mobile along with the android device to get a share of the huge android market.

However we hate to say that the leaked images never looked leaked and the specifications are precise. Although this may be derived from the latest and previous Nokia Lumia devices, but we smell a PR stunt to increase the gathering for the February 24th release!

Anyways, welcome Nokia to the android world!

Oppo N1 To Make Entry To Indian Market

Oppo, the famous Chinese mobile phone brand is about to make its entry into Indian Market on January 30, where they have organized a press meet announcing their entry. The twitter feed for Oppo is already alive and is teasing its followers with the glimpses of Oppo N1. (#N1)

The phone comes with the CyanogenMod ROM, which is usually considered a custom ROM or fans OS. Oppo seems to have plans for releasing two versions of the N1, which will have the Oppo's proprietary Color OS, based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, featuring quite a few so-called design ‘improvements’ over Google’s vanilla UI.

Oppo N1 to be launched In India

The smartphone comes with a 5.9-inch 1080p IPS display and is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 SoC clocked at 1.7GHz. It also features a healthy 2GB of RAM, and 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. The battery is humongous 3610mAh which should be more than capable for a longer standby/talktime.

The phone comes with a rotating camera module, the second phone to have this feature, earlier one was Gione Elife 7 although the tech2 reports that N1 was the first phone launched in China to have this feature.

The 13MP camera is equipped with an awesome F/2.0 range, which may result in stunning pictures. The CMOS sensor will also have specially-designed Fujitsu IPS imaging chip. The camera has a 6-piece lens design, which Oppo says is the first of its kind on Android. The entire camera rotates 206 degrees allowing it to act as a front-facing camera as well. Oppo says the rotation has been tested 100,000 times and this means you can swivel it 40 times a day for 7 years. There’s a dual-mode flash as well designed to work for front and back shots.

Google Chrome Security Vulnerability Can Listen, Process And Record Your Voice!

A developer Tal Ater, an Israeli entrepreneur and web developer, found the bug on the web browser by chance. Ater was working on developing a speech recognition plugin when he discovered this bug and this is quite a serious one as well. Ater demonstrates that once you allow microphone settings for the browser, it remembers the setting for any other sites, without asking permissions!

So literally your conversations can be recorded live and the post also goes to say that the recording can be triggered using specific keywords as well, and whenever you speak one such keyword, the site can record the data and process it and also save/send it! Quite scary.

Google Chrome Vulnerability that allows hackers to record what you speak!

Tal Ater, did report this issue to google developers and as per his post. Google, the tech giant originally thanked him and even nominated him for a prize for his diligence. Along with this the bug fix was also developed by the google developers, after identifying the root issue, but unfortunately to-date, this has not been provided to end users.

By exploiting bugs in Google Chrome, malicious sites can activate your microphone, and listen in on anything said around your computer, even after you've left those sites.

Even when not using your computer - conversations, meetings and phone calls next to your computer may be recorded and compromised.

On constant queries from Ater, he was updated that the issue is being discussed by Standards Group. The discussions are still going on how to launch the update without any legal issues, but till then the chrome browsers continue to be vulnerable!

Ater believes it is a major security concern, but Google seem to think otherwise. NDTV tried to replicate the problem and succeeded, highlighting the issue of the Google Chrome bug that allows hackers to record voice communications.
