Science : Monogamy May Have Evolved to Prevent Infanticide

“Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other,” Katharine Hepburn once said. “Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.” Despite the famed actress’s remarks, human males and females do have a strong tendency to live together in monogamous pairs, albeit for highly varied periods of time and degrees of fidelity. Just how such behavior arose has been the topic of much debate among researchers. A new study comes to a startling conclusion: Among primates, including perhaps humans, monogamy evolved because it protected infants from being killed by rival males.

Living in pairs, what researchers call social monogamy, has repeatedly evolved among animals, although in widely varying proportions among different groups. Thus, about 90% of bird species are socially monogamous, probably because incubating eggs and feeding hatchlings is a full-time job that requires both parents. But in mammals, females carry the babies inside their bodies and are solely responsible for providing milk to young infants—and only about 5% of species are socially monogamous. That leaves most mammalian males free to run around and impregnate other females. Primates, however, seem to be a special case: About 27% of primate species are socially monogamous; and recent studies by Christopher Opie, an anthropologist at University College London, and his colleagues have concluded that social monogamy arose relatively late in primate evolution, only about 16 million years ago. (The earliest primates date back to about 55 million years.)

But why did social monogamy arise at all among mammals, including primates, given the many reproductive advantages to males having access to as many females as possible? Scientists have proposed three major hypotheses: Monogamy provides more effective parental care for infants, as in birds; it prevents females from mating with rival males, especially in species where females are widely spaced and cannot all be easily monopolized by one male; or it protects against the risk of infanticide, which is very high among some primate species, including chimpanzees and gorillas, and is often explained by the desire of a rival male to quickly return a mother to a fertile state so that he can sire his own offspring. Some researchers think that a combination of all three factors, and perhaps still others, provide the best explanation for monogamy.

Resolving this debate is important, researchers say, especially for understanding the evolution of human mating behavior. Although humans aren’t completely monogamous, “the emergence of pair-bonding in humans was a major evolutionary transition, which dramatically altered the evolutionary trajectory of our species,” says Sergey Gavrilets, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Many researchers think that we could not have evolved our large brains without joint parental care during the extended period of helplessness required for infant brains to grow to their full size. “Understanding the forces that drove that transition can help us better understand the causes of human uniqueness,” Gavrilets adds...

News : More Than 200 Escape From Pakistan Prison Attack

PESHAWAR — More than 200 prisoners escaped following a massive attack on one of the main prisons in northwestern Pakistan on Monday night, a senior security official said.

Authorities imposed a curfew in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, following an overnight attack on the 100-year-old central prison there, which housed more than 500 prisoners. All roads leading to neighboring restive tribal regions of North and South Waziristan were blocked off and a search operation has been launched, officials said, requesting they not be named.

“The attackers have melted away in the population,” one official acknolwledged.

More than 100 militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy arms rode in on motorbikes and vehicles and then blasted the prison walls and broke open locks on cells, freeing 243 prisoners including 30 militants, the security official said.

“They used megaphones to call names of their comrades in the lock-ups and then broke up their cells using explosives devices,” the official said.

Thirteen people were killed in the attack that began at around 11 p.m. and continued for three hours, the official said.

“There are explosives littered around the compound,” the official said.

Four policemen and five civilians were among the dead. Four prisoners who belonged to the minority Shia sect and had been charged in targeted killings were also identified and killed by militants, the official said. Another 13 people were wounded in the attack.

The attack was the second major prison raid in two years. In April last year, militants stormed a prison in neighbouring Bannu district, freeing nearly 400 prisoners...

Market : RBI keeps all Interest Rates Unchanged, concern on growth forecast

MUMBAI: Weighed down by a weak rupee, the Reserve Bank on Tuesday chose to keep all key interest rates unchanged and asked the government to take urgent steps to reign in the high current account deficit.

Lowering the GDP growth projection for the current fiscal to 5.5% from 5.7%, the central bank said the external sector is the "biggest threat" to economic stability.

It also said that the recent liquidity tightening measures, taken to support the rupee, will be rolled back in a calibrated manner as stability is restored to the foreign exchange market, enabling it to revert to the policy of supporting growth with continuing vigil on inflation.

The RBI will endeavour to keep inflation, which is under threat from a depreciating rupee, at 5% by March end.

"The policy stance is guided by the need for continuous vigil and preparedness to pro-actively respond to risks to the economy from external developments, especially those stemming from global financial markets," Governor D Subbarao said in what would be his last policy announcement unveiled here.

Accordingly, the repo rate or the rate at which RBI lends to the system, has been retained at 7.25% and the cash reserve ratio, the amount of deposits banks park with RBI, has been kept unchanged at 4%...

News : Telangana Decision Today, Congress WC To Decide

Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest policy making body, is likely to take a decision on the formation of a separate state of Telangana today.

According to television reports, the UPA Coordination Committee will first meet at around 4 p.m. This will be followed by a meeting of the CWC at 5.30 p.m.

These meetings come a time when the Congress high command is said to be inclined towards bifurcating Andhra Pradesh notwithstanding the opposition from within the party and its state leadership.

Meanwhile, additional forces, including CRPF, Rapid Action Forces and State Special Police, have been rushed to Andhra Pradesh, to deal with any situation which may arise in the wake of fresh developments over the statehood demand for Telangana.

According to certain media reports, Hyderabad is likely to be a Union Territory for five years and will act as joint capital of the two states to be created out of the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

The Union Territory will be administered by a Lieutenant Governor. The Governor of Telangana state will be the ex-officio Lieutenant Governor of Hyderabad in these five years.

Media reports further state that a proposal to this effect is going to be put up to the Union Cabinet before August 5.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has so far reiterated his stance for maintaining a united Andhra Pradesh at any cost.

Several ministers and MPs from Andhra Pradesh have been camping in Delhi over the last 2-3 days to discuss the issue with the top leadership.

Congress MPs from Telangana have accused the Centre of following what they call a ‘one-step-forward-two-backward’ approach when it comes to addressing their demand for a separate state.

The Centre’s flip-flop over the issue began in December 2009 when the then Home Minister P. Chidambaram promised the formation of a new state only to go back on it after a few days.

The issue was later pushed before a committee headed by Justice B.N. Srikrishna. This panel did not come up with a tangible solution, but instead presented six options...

Science : UK Teams Design Human Mission To Mars!

Scientists at Imperial College London have designed a concept mission to land astronauts on Mars.

The plan envisages a three-person crew journeying to Mars aboard a small two-part craft.

The craft would rotate to generate artificial gravity and use a heat shield to protect itself against solar flares.

The crew would then return to Martian orbit in a pre-sent craft fuelled using ice from beneath the planet's surface.

The concept, developed in conjunction with the BBC, is intended to spark further debate about the technical obstacles and risks that would have to be overcome in order to put humans on Mars.

"Every part of this mission scenario has been demonstrated one way or the other, including the in situ propellant production on the surface of Mars," said Prof Tom Pike, who led the Imperial design team.

"There are big, big jumps between a demonstration at one level and putting together the engineering systems for a mission, but they are engineering challenges. They are not fundamentally about making new discoveries."

The new Imperial concept comes amid renewed interest in the Red Planet with two private groups having proposed missions in recent months.

The Imperial team have designed a two-part craft, consisting of a Martian lander with a heat shield, inside which the crew would also ascend into Earth orbit....

Sports : Fixing Case : Cronje's Father Threatens Legal Case against Indian Police

Johannesburg: Ewie Cronje, father of deceased former South African captain Hansie Cronje, has threatened legal action against the Indian police for filing a chargesheet which implicates his son in the 2000 match-fixing scandal.

The Indian authorities have brought charges against Cronje and five international bookmakers 13 years after the scandal that rocked the international cricket fraternity.

But a New Delhi court has ruled that charges against Cronje should be dropped because he died in a plane crash in 2002.

However, the original charge sheet alleges that Cronje received more than Rs 12 million in two payments from bookmaker Sanjeev Chawla but Cronje senior said Hansie had received less than a quarter of that amount.

"It`s nonsense. Where is the money?" Cronje told the Afrikaans daily `Beeld` here.

"I`m considering legal action against the Indian police," he added.

He said he plans to move court because the Indian police had known since 1981 that match-fixing was occurring, but did nothing about it.

"Then they made Hansie the scapegoat," he said.

Cronje initially denied being involved in match-fixing, even convincing his then boss and South African cricket supremo Ali Bacher to dismiss the allegations by the Indian authorities....

Bollywood : Katrina and Ranbir Spotted in Srilanka!

After holidaying in Spain, Bollywood actors and rumoured lovers Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor have been spotted again - this time in Sri Lanka. The stars, like many others before them, aren't talking about their alleged relationship but are giving us all the right hints.

If red is the colour of love then the two were rather colour-cooridnated as they were sighted in red clothes in the island country. Ranbir Kapoor is in Sri Lanka to prepare for his role in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet and Katrina Kaif is reportedly accompanying him- at least till work commitments come calling. The shooting of her upcoming film Bang Bang has been delayed due to her co-star Hrithik Roshan's surgery and that's why Katrina is spending some quality time with Ranbir.

And while their photographs were clicked at a coffee shop in Sri Lanka, the two also enjoyed a workout session together with Ranbir's trainer. Not so long ago the duo were clicked in Spain while holidaying in Ibiza and while Ranbir has maintained his single status in the past, these pictures by Stardust magazine tell another story.

But if you are waiting for an announcement from the two, it looks like there's a slim chance of that happening. Of the many reasons one could think of, the truth is that they have been involved in very public relationships in the past. Dating a superstar like Salman Khan was never easy. From birthdays to brawls Katrina saw them all. The media circus around it was immense. Ranbir too has gone through the same. He may have scored at the box office with Deepika Padukone in the movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani recently but once upon a time things were bitter...

Eight days after the mid-day meal tragedy which claimed the lives of 23 children, police today arrested the absconding school principal and has begun interrogating her.

"We arrested her from Chhapra town," Saran district superintendent of police and head of the special investigation team Sujeet Kumar said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar confirmed the arrest of the principal, Meena Devi.

"The investigation is on. The principal of the school is in police custody. We will probe the incident from all possible angles," Kumar told reporters in Patna.

State Police chief Abhyanand who was present at the CM's press meet said the absconding principal of Dharmasati Gandaman primary school in Chhapra in Saran district has been arrested and she did not surrender.

He, however, refused to disclose the location from where she was arrested and other details saying these were matters of investigation.

Meena Devi was held even as a notice declaring her as a proclaimed offender was pasted at her Chhapra home.

The notice asked Meena Devi to present herself before the police immediately failing which the process of attachment of her property will start, the SP told PTI.

Earlier in the day, she had filed an anticipatory bail application in the court of CJM Chhapra which did not provide her any instant relief.

Tech : Google Pays tribute to Rosalind Franklin, DNA Scientist

Rosalind Franklin, a British biophysicist and x-ray crystallographer helped discover the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) but controversially missed out on the Nobel prize.

Born on July 25, 1920 in Notting Hill, London, Rosalind Franklin was the second child and eldest daughter of her parents who belonged to an affluent and influential British Jewish family.

Franklin's scientific work lead to X-ray diffraction images of DNA which resulted in the discovery of the DNA double helix.

DNA plays an important part in cell metabolism and genetics. The discovery of its structure helped Franklin's co-workers understand how genetic information is passed from parents to children. This has today helped medical science make a lot of progress.

Besides this Franklin's studies also helped in the understanding of the molecular structures of RNA, viruses, coal and graphite.

In April 1958, at the age of 37, the biophysicist died of ovarian cancer. Franlin worked at King's College London under Maurice Wilkins as she conducted her DNA research. Wilkins with his friends Francis Crick and James Watson were awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1962 for their DNA study. Crick later acknowledged that the trio used Franklin's images and they were "the data we actually used" to formulate the hypothesis regarding the structure of DNA.
