India to attempt re-launch of failed satellite

Indian space authorities will try to re-launch a communications satellite three years after two successive attempts at lift-off failed.

A 29-hour countdown for the launch began on Sunday at the launch pad in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

In December 2010, the rocket disappeared in a plume of smoke moments after its launch from Sriharikota.

An earlier attempt to launch the satellite had been unsuccessful in April 2010.

India has successfully launched lighter satellites in recent years, but has faced problems sending up heavier payloads.

The Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), carrying communication satellite GSAT-14, will be powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine, officials said.

The launch is scheduled for 16:50 India time (11:20GMT) from Sriharikota launch pad.

News : Will Spliting Telangana have a domino effect?

The Srikrishna Commission report of 2011, appointed by UPA to suggest a way out of the Telangana imbroglio, recommended a separate state. But with a caveat. Because, "while creation of Telangana would satisfy a large majority of people from the region," the report said, "it would also throw up several serious problems." The Congress decision, driven by pure political survival instinct, came without studying the larger economic and political costs.

It ignored home ministry assessments warning of a revival of Naxalism in the new state, the billions of rupees coastal Andhra Pradesh would spend on a new state capital when it moves out of Hyderabad, and recent Intelligence Bureau (IB) assessments warning of public outrage opposing division.

But the biggest fear, a home ministry report of July 24 warns, is of "unrest and prolonged agitations" in other states including Uttar Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra, where people have been demanding new states. Even before CWC took its final call, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) called for a 72-hour shutdown in Darjeeling in support of Gorkhaland. In Maharashtra, BJP and Shiv Sena braced themselves to raise the issue of a separate Vidarbha. In Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati upped the ante for carving four states out of Uttar Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh was the first state created on a linguistic basis when the Telugu-speaking areas of erstwhile Hyderabad state were merged with Andhra state in 1956. Experts predict Telangana could spawn secessionist trends. "This thoughtless decision may lead to a demand for a separate Telugu nation, the 17th largest in the world," says political commentator C. Narasimha Rao...

News : After Telangana its Rayalaseema - Protest Begins

The immediate fallout is a growing demand for a greater Rayalaseema - one of the two regions that Andhra Pradesh will be left with after Telangana becomes a state.

The idea is to create another state by adding two coastal districts of Nellore and Prakasham to Kurnool, Kadapa, Chittoor and Anantapur of Rayalaseema, with Kurnool as its capital.

“Give us a special package to ensure development here or create a greater Rayalaseema,” said TG Venkatesh, a state minister from Kurnool. For, the politicians know that a state with only four big districts and no big cities and resources can hardly be viable.

Earlier, the Congress floated the idea of Rayala-Telangana and Seema-Andhra, dividing the region with eight Lok Sabha seats to each to limit YSR Congress Party chief Jaganmohan Reddy, who hails from Kadapa in Seema-Andhra.

But the idea backfired, with an IPS officer even resigning in protest.

For, Rayalaseema – a region of distinct culture, cuisine and accent — was divided before. Bellary, now part of Karnataka— then Mysore in the 1950s — was part of the Rayalaseema region.

The aggression that led to the large-scale violence this time in Rayalaseema and the resignations by Congress ministers from the region came from insecurity born out of economic backwardness and the absence of natural resources.

In fact, the report by the five-member Justice BN Srikrishna committee, formed to look into the Telangana statehood issue, reported in January 2011 that Rayalaseema is the most backward region in the state.

The other important factor is the fear that coastal Andhraites will grab most government jobs and call all the shots in new Andhra.

“The best scenario will be a united state, peaceful like before and for everyone’s benefit,” says Ravindra Prasad (28), who runs a computer centre in Adoni in Kurnool district.

Ironically, people in Telangana also had such complaints against both the other regions...

News : Telangana Demands finds its voices in Legislature too

Hyderabad: In a dramatic twist to the Telangana march, two legislators of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) climbed atop the Andhra Pradesh assembly building Friday and hoisted a black flag.

Vinay Bhaskar and K. Samaiah created a flutter by climbing on top of the TRS legislative office in the assembly premises and hoisting a black flag. Holding TRS flags and wearing black T-shirts, the lawmakers threatened to jump down if the police tried to arrest them.

However, several assembly marshals and policemen climbed on the building and tried to bring them down.

The legislators were protesting against what they called the undemocratic arrests of hundreds of people in Telangana to foil the march to press for the creation of a separate Telangana state.

Other TRS legislators squatted near the main entrance of the assembly building to protest the "repressive" measures by the government. All of them were holding black flags and wearing T-shirts with slogans that read, "Police rule".

Our Review

The issue which was underlying for a long time and is a constant demand of majority parties in Andhra, has been denied due to various issues. Personally we feel that there shouldn't be a need for another state as Andhra has been doing good for really long time. But the TRS seems to put in some strong points which are worth considering.

Telangana issue and the demand to set up a steel plant in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday disrupted the proceedings of the State Legislative Assembly here in Hyderabad.
