Sony Playstation 4 Planning High To Increast Their Fan Hold

The strong first-day sales of the PlayStation 4 console is surely good news for Sony Corp., but it’s way too early to get excited about the boost the struggling company might get.

One million units of the PS4 sold within the first 24 hours of its launch in North America last Friday puts Sony on track to achieve its goal of selling five million units by the end of its fiscal year in March. But the success of a game console business can’t be determined in weeks or even months, said SMBC Friend Research Center analyst Hiroshi Sakai.

“You distribute your console as widely as possible to create a user platform, so you can start making more money with software,” Mr. Sakai said. When strong hardware sales are followed by a string of major hit games, that’s when the business has really taken off. Sony takes a cut from the sales of software created by third-party game developers.

While the PS4 console has received generally positive reviews, many video game blogs have found the list of software titles at the launch disappointing. Still, Sony has promised that more games are coming over the next few months.

With the new hardware, Sony isn’t repeating the same mistake it made with the PlayStation 3, which carried expensive components that initially forced the company to sell the console at a loss. A recent teardown of the PlayStation 4 by Techinsights showed that the total cost of components for the PS4 came to $296, almost $100 below the console’s selling price of $399.

Still, the teardown results don’t mean Sony will record a profit of $100 every time it sells a PS4. Selling a game console involves a lot of other expenses, such as promotional campaigns and fees to secure shelf space at retailers, said Mr. Sakai. While the lower cost of PS4 components compared to its predecessor makes it easier for Sony to minimize losses or break even on the hardware side of the PS4 business, “hardware won’t be a huge money maker,” he said.

“Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America (on Nov. 29),” said Andrew House, the head of Sony’s video game division.

Sony is off to a good start and it shouldn’t be too hard to meet its five-million-unit sales target by March, said SMBC Nikko Securities analyst Koki Shiraishi. But strong sales in the first few months will only be the first step in Sony’s attempt to create a strong platform for distributing game software as well as other content such as movies and music in the long run, he said.

November is a big month for video game fans, with Microsoft Corp. set to launch its next-generation Xbox One console on Friday.

Xbox One Looses To Playstation 4 Sales Says Survey

The restrictions and policies along with the price point may be costing Microsoft's Xbox One, as the latest poll by Reuters shows that people are more inclined to buy Sony's Playstation 4 than the much upgraded and policy implied Xbox One.

The poll was conducted from 23rd September to 27th September which revealed this stunning fact. Although Microsoft boasts about its much faster sensors, processor and graphics, it still comes at a cost - the most talked about implication was the requirement of internet connection to continue playing games, and ruled off the possibility of an offline pleasure. This has been received with much criticism, and made MS to rethink this policy. Here the Sony got the track and was promoting offline gaming as well at a $100 less of the price of Xbox One.

The poll showed 26 percent of 1,297 people surveyed online last week say they are likely to purchase the new PlayStation 4 when available, versus 15 percent opting for the Xbox One.

The interesting fact was that, among those below the age of 40. Of that group of 408 people, 41 percent picked Sony's PS4 versus 27 percent for Microsoft's Xbox One, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The Xbox policies had even surprised the Sony CEO(News Here) and this seems to have been the roar of the public. Sony Also have received 1 million preorders for the product, for which it was a proud moment(News Here).

But 56-year-old participant Jon Leigh, who plays six to 10 hours of video games a week and lives in Harlan, Kentucky, thinks the Microsoft controversy won't sway Xbox fans. "People who use Microsoft products will continue to use them," he said. Leigh will go with the Xbox One because of its upgraded "Kinect" motion sensor, and because he's more familiar with the Xbox than the PlayStation.

The $399 PS4 and $499 Xbox One represent the first major upgrades of mainstream gaming hardware in years, setting game developers scrambling to put out new releases that take advantage of better graphics and faster processors. They are scheduled to hit store shelves from mid-November, about a year after Nintendo's slow-selling Wii U. Of the 1,297 respondents, only 3 percent said they now played games on the Wii U, versus 20 percent on the Xbox 360, 20 percent on computers, and 18 percent on Sony's PlayStation 3.
Indeed, 64 percent of total respondents said they would not buy any new game hardware at all this season, when posed with choices ranging from the Xbox and PS4 to Nintendo's 2DS and Valve's Steam Box. The Reuters/Ipsos poll underscored strong interest in Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Ghosts," slated for November, which will try and take on Take-Two Interactive Software's mega-hit, "Grand Theft Auto V."

Sony Boss Surprised By Xbox One Policies

At the conference the night before, in front of a global online audience, he had berated Microsoft for the mixed, confused positioning of its Xbox One console launch. At first it was going to be a digital-focused machine, with discs relegated to a secondary position; there would be no traditional pre-owned game sales, there would be a requirement for near-constant internet connection.

Sony has put its cards on the table. The PlayStation 4 release date is 15 November in North America and 29 November in Europe.

At a packed press conference earlier this week in Cologne, where the monstrous Gamescom event is being held, the company laid out its final pre-release vision for the machine. And it's all about games. Sure, there's a roster of video services (with LoveFilm and BBC iPlayer heading up the UK offering), but whether we're talking discs or digital distribution, triple-A publishers or one-person teams, it is and always has been about games.

Playstation 4 Preorders cross One Million Globally

"The response we have received is nothing short of incredible," he said at a news conference on the sidelines of Gamescom, Europe's biggest videogames fair.

Cologne, Germany: Sony has had more than 1 million preorders worldwide for its new PlayStation 4 console, the head of its SCE computer entertainment division said on Tuesday.

SCE Chief Executive Andrew House added that the console will be available from November 15 in North America and will hit stores in Europe from November 29.

"The response we have received is nothing short of incredible," he said at a news conference on the sidelines of Gamescom, Europe's biggest videogames fair.

He added the console will be available in 32 countries worldwide during the holiday season.

Microsoft Corp has said it will start selling its latest console at some point in November, intensifying competition ahead of the year-end holidays and gift-giving season.

Sony has priced the PlayStation 4, its first new console in seven years, USD100 lower than the new Xbox One by Microsoft at USD399.

Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One in May, its first new gaming console in eight years, marking its strongest push so far to dominate consumers' living rooms with an array of exclusive media content.

Microsoft Europe's Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Chris Lewis said on Tuesday preorders for the Xbox One were "unprecedented" but declined to give more details.

Sony said it would also cut the retail price for its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita devices to USD199 in the United States and 199 euros in Europe.

Previously the Vita was 249 euros and the PlayStation 3 was 229 euros.
