No apologies to Doctors, Does what he feels right - Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan was finally caught up by IANS for an interview after much stir caused by the 'medscape' the umbrella association of 21 medical institutions. Medscape had criticized Aamir for being prejudicial about the medical profession and was accused of showing medical profession in bad lights!(click here for the news). Hence, the association wanted a public apology by the actor for what he has done. For those who did see the show, you will clearly understand what Aamir had to say, but it seems none from Medscape took the trouble to see the show yet!!

"I have absolutely no intentions of apologising because I have not done anything wrong," Aamir told IANS in an exclusive interview over phone from Mumbai. "We were aware that since these are issues that are core to all of us and affecting every Indian, obviously there are some people who are part of the problem, and they are not going to be happy with us because these are the ones who don`t want a solution to be there.

"In fact, I would have been surprised if we would not have earned brickbats. The people who are getting troubled are very likely the ones who are part of the problems," said Aamir, adding that he hasn`t received any physical threats so far.

The episode however has put Aamir Khan in bad books of Indian Medical Association(IMA), but as we do understand there is a great deal of truth which we have experienced through years. Aamir had also brought in Dr. K. K. Talwar, the current chief of IMA and had laid the facts before him on how many malpractices were carried out across the country.

"I don`t know whether they have seen the show because a number of times we brought out that there are many doctors who are doing great work. We gave such strong examples of positive work by doctors like Dr. Devi Shetty and Dr. Shamit Sharma," says Aamir. 

"I have not insulted the medical profession at all. I have the highest regard for the medical profession. In fact what is insulting to the medical profession is those doctors who are indulging in unethical practices. They have insulted the medical profession, not me," he said.

"A lot of doctors have written to me and said, `Your work is fantastic and we are thank you for what you have done`. Dr. K.K.Talwar, head of the Medical Council of India, was on our show and after the show was aired, he wrote to me saying: `I thought what you did on the show was very good.`

"He said that `I am aware that a small section of doctors is upset with you, but I want you to know that what you are doing is very important and I want you to know that MCI and I will do everything we can in our control and power to set things right`. Now that is such an important and encouraging response.

"Young medical students have written to me that this is a profession we are about to enter and we are so inspired by your show to do the right thing when we enter the profession," he added.

"I want to thank these doctors and young medical students whose messages and letters have been most encouraging" he said.

"I feel what I have set out to do is extremely important and what I support is important for me and very important for society and our country. I have absolutely no hesitation in doing what I feel is right for the country. So in that, if there is a small group of people who are getting upset, it is sad, but so be it. In fact, I would request those people who are getting upset to look inward.

"I believe we are trying to make a sincere effort in first understanding issues and then shedding light on them, and we are committed to that attempt," said the 47-year-old Mr. perfectionist, as he is better known.

He should stick to making films - Doctors to Aamir

Now that is a serious impact if you talk about the blow that last episode of Satyamev Jayate made. Now it is the most elite and professionals that have come forward against the actor. The last episode of Satyamev Jayate discussed the malpractices in medical profession and how the doctors were making money all through illegal trade and equipment sales. The story was true to the core as there has been many incidents and stories that were portrayed, with the cheif of IMC coming in to clarify the cases. There were also testimonials given out by the doctors themselves about how some doctors were practicing illegally and gambling with patient's health.

Everyone with a minimal knowledge on the profession would understand that at one point or the other they may have encountered one such doctor. So its not rare, and if we remember right, the accusation was not generalized, he said that there were still good doctors who helped poor and did consider the profession divine rather than a business. But it seems that the final note did not reach the association for doctors. Medscape, an association of 21 medical institutions have asked an apology from the actor for disgracing the profession.

"It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny," Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said. 

"Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films," said another doctor, Sunita Dube, president of Medscape. 

"Surprisingly, no doctors' body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him," Dube said. 

We are wondering why medscape is coming in with rage as again, the accusation was not generalized. It does show in a publicity stunt by the association, but we would know only when time passes. Medscape pointed out that doctors were subjected to assault without any fault and many people didn't understand the pressures of the profession. 

"Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?" asked Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape.

But then, were there no innocent victims in the previous topics that was discussed by Satyamev Jayate? It breaks our common sense why Medscape is reacting to this, as its an open secret what medical representatives and pharma mafia does at hospitals!

Again, we are not generalizing the corruption but at least 1 out of 5 doctors do know how to make the profession a business, and a serious one!
