Samsung Wrap Around Display For Premium Phones Coming Soon

Samsung is taking the smart phone war to the newer levels as it is planning a wrap around screen phone somewhere around next year. The latest news was broken by bloomberg where it reported that the Samsung's screen technology is taking new turn with the wrap around screens for its premium mobiles.

The screen of this phone wraps around the edges so users can view messages while viewing from an angle and each side of the display works independently, according to a Bloomberg report.

The South Korean manufacturer's wraparound screen smartphone would be using an upgraded version of its Youm technology, which was showcased in January this year. This display technology is also used in Galaxy Round, the company's only curved screen smartphone.

Bloomberg's report, citing two sources close to the development, said: "The display may be used in the S or Note series of premium handsets or may be the first in a new line."

However, the report was unclear about the launch date of the device. Samsung doesn't have a specific release date for the new device, but the handset is more likely to come out during the second half of next year.

Samsung has clear plans of including the bendable/foldable displays by the start of 2015 which should be the innovation that most of the techies are waiting for as showcased on the techshow earlier this year.

Other companies are also working on new display technologies to compete in the booming smartphone market. Soon after Samsung launched the world's first handset with a curved screen, LG had launched a similar smartphone, named G Flex.

Apple too is reported to be planning a curved screen iPhone next year that may feature a larger display than its earlier variants. Apple is also said to be working on a curved screen smartwatch.

Cyber Crime First Mobile Trojan Botnets Spreading

PUNE: For the first time in the history of mobile cybercrime, a trojan is being spread using botnets controlled by other criminal groups, said a statement issued by the Kaspersky lab.

Over the last three months analysts have been investigating how the 'Obad.a' trojan, a malicious app for Android, is distributed. The criminals behind the trojan have adopted a new technique to spread their malware. It has also become clear that Obad.a is mostly found in CIS countries.

In total, 83% of attempted infections were recorded in Russia, while it was also detected on mobile devices in Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

The most interesting distribution model saw various versions of Obad.a spread with Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.Opfake.a. This double infection attempt starts with a text message to users, urging them to download a recently received text message. If the victim clicks the link, a file containing Opfake.a is automatically downloaded onto the smartphone or tablet, the statement said.

The malicious file can only be installed if the user then launches it; should that happen, the trojan sends further messages to all the contacts on the newly infected device. Clicking the link in these messages downloads Obad.a. It's a well-organized system: one Russian mobile network provider reported more than 600 messages containing these links within just five hours, pointing to a mass distribution. In most cases the malware was spread using devices that were already infected.

Apart from using mobile botnets, this highly complex trojan is also distributed by spam messages. This is a major carrier of the Obad.a trojan. Typically a message warning the user of unpaid 'debts' lures victims to follow a link which automatically downloads Obad.a onto the mobile device. Again, though, users must run the downloaded file in order to install the Trojan, the statement said.

"In three months we discovered 12 versions of Backdoor.AndroidOS.Obad.a. All of them had the same function set and a high level of code obfuscation, and each used an Android OS vulnerability that gives the malware DeviceAdministrator rights and made it much more difficult to delete. As soon as we discovered this, we informed Google and the loophole has been closed in Android 4.3. However, only a few new smartphones and tablets run this version, and older devices running earlier versions are still under threat. Obad.a, which uses a large number of unpublished vulnerabilities, is more like Windows malware than other Trojans for Android," said an antivirus expert at the lab.

55.48 Crore Mobile Users, 14.32 Crore Internet Users In India

New Delhi: There are 55.48 crore actual mobile users in the country and 14.32 crore internet users, according to a study by research firm Juxt.

"India has 55.48 crore mobile users as per our India Mobile Landscape (IML) 2013 study. More than 29.8 crore, about 54 per cent, of these device owners are in rural areas as compared to 25.6 crore in cities and towns," Juxt co-founder Mrutyunjay told PTI.

There are total 77.39 crore functional SIMs with validity but only 64.34 SIMs are being used by 55.48 crore mobile devices owners, the study report said.

IML study finds that there are 14.32 crore internet users in the country.

"The number of unique Internet users in India, who access Internet from their desktop or laptop, smart TV or mobile data connections together stand at around 94.7 million. But when one adds the number of users who also access Internet through operators portals such as Airtel Live and Reliance R World, the number goes up to 143.2 million," Mrutyunjay said.

The study found 2.38 crore individuals access Internet from their mobile phones using a data connection such as GPRS or 3G. Out of this, 93 lakh access Internet only through mobile phones and around 77 per cent of these users are in rural areas. Talking about size of survey, he said that the field survey was conducted between May and mid-July 2013 covering 109 urban centres and 196 villages in all the 28 states and 3 union territories in India.

"It (survey) covered 80 of the 88 regions as classified by the National Sample Survey Organisation under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. The study sample represents 94.8 per cent of the Indian population and 96.1 per cent of the total Indian households," he said.

Meanwhile, as per the data revealed by sectoral regulator TRAI, there are total 87.33 crore mobile subscribers in the country. Of this, 73.14 crore customers were found to be active on a particular date in June. The cumulative revenue of telecom service providers was Rs 54,284 crore in the January-March quarter as per TRAI data.

HTC Desire-601, HTC Desire 300 Launched

HTC has expanded its Desire range with the introduction of a new mid-range smartphone, the Desire 601 and an entry-level smartphone, the Desire 300.

The HTC Desire 601 comes with a 4.5-inch qHD display with a 540x960 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor along with 1GB of RAM. It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with some HTC One camera goodies like Sequence shot, Always Smile, Object Removal and HTC Zoe. It also sports a VGA front-facing camera. The device comes with 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 64GB via a microSD card.

The HTC Desire 601 also features dual-front stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers. Connectivity options on the device include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G. The device includes a 2100mAh battery that the company claims can deliver about 13 hours of talk-time and 440 hours of standby time.

The HTC Desire 300 comes with a 4.3-inch WVGA display. The device is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4processor along with 512MB RAM. The phone also packs in 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD card. It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The connectivity options on the HTC Desire 300 include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G. Backing the device is a 1650mAh battery that can deliver up to 11 hours of talk-time and 625 hours of standby time.

Both of these newly launched smartphones run Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense on top with BlinkFeed and other features. However, it's not clear at this stage whether the OS version is Android 4.1 or Android 4.2.

Commenting on the launch Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation said, "For the last 17 years HTC has challenged the mobile industry to develop innovations that change the way in which people use their mobile phone. Now we're not only changing the way people view the mid-range and entry-level market but setting the bar even higher when it comes to our premium devices and capabilities."

The company has announced that the HTC Desire 601 will be available in select markets across EMEA(Europe, the Middle East and Africa) from September while the HTC Desire 300 will hit the stores in October.

HTC has also launched HTC BoomBass, which is a compact, Bluetooth-enabled subwoofer with an amplifier. However, the company notes that BoomBass will be available from the HTC Accessory Store starting mid-October 2013.

UPDATE : Microsoft Buys Nokia for 7.2bn bid

Finland's Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, has been struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as Apple (AAPL.O) and Samsung (005930.KS).

Analysts say Elop's bold bet in 2011 to adopt Microsoft's untested Windows Phone software has yet to pay off.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014 and is subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders and regulatory approvals. Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's Windows software to run its mobile phones.

"It's a bold step into the future - a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," Microsoft's outgoing CEO, Steve Ballmer, said in a statement.

"Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."

Nokia said in a statement it expected that Elop, along with senior executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber, would transfer to Microsoft when the deal was concluded. It did not say what roles they would take at Microsoft.

Nokia board chairman Risto Siilasmaa would take over CEO duties while the Finnish firm looked for a new CEO, it said.

Elop, a Canadian hired by Nokia in 2010 from Microsoft, has been one of the favourites to take over as Microsoft chief when Ballmer steps down.
