Snapchat Hacked : Security Warnings were ignored!

Snapchat users continue to get affected by the recent hack. The company which did provide self destructing messages and was popular for the same reason mostly in US has been hacked and shattered completely as an individual/group has hacked the database and have uploaded it on to a new site named SnapChatDB, where 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers are free for download!!

The reports came in that Gibson Security on Christmas Eve that its app contained a security flaw that could expose its users in the exact way that SnapchatDB managed to do. Days after the warning, Snapchat acknowledged the vulnerability in a blog, but downplayed the seriousness of the security hole.

Snapchat had updated on their blog that they have implemented security measures to prevent the abuse or hack, but it seems that the main vulnerability was still open which resulted in the breach.

Snapchat is widely popular among youngsters and adults alike and has a user base of 9% in US which comes close to 26 Million. The company had also been running good and had dropped a $3 billion buy out offer from facebook. The exact revenue of the company is still unclear but the hack has been a major blow to its popularity.

How To Check If hacked?

If you want to ensure that your details are not hacked, please visit : http://lookup.gibsonsec.org/ and the details will be shown on the site. Gibson Security has however removed the final two digits from each of the results respecting user privacy.

"Our motivation behind the release was to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get this exploit fixed," SnapchatDB told the Verge. "Security matters as much as user experience does."

http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-snapchat-hacked-46-million-20140102,0,5282960.story#ixzz2pGijJ42c

If you are hacked, there is very little that you can do. Apart from registering a new name and also requesting the mobile carrier to issue a new phone number as well. Considering the fact that the vulnerability is still not fixed, the concern is still high among people who use snapchat.

Also as a general rule of thumb, never provide phone number for signups if you feel that it is not required. Security is something which is compromised by your carelessness (mostly). Good luck!

Update -4th Jan 2013

Snapchat has now released the update to fix this flaw and it is now reported that the find friends feature on the app was what the hackers had used to penalize 4.6 million users. Although the security update doesn't do any good for the accounts that are already hacked, and most of the users are now busy unlinking their phone numbers from critical databases like bank accounts and other social apps.

Russia Warns America Of Catastrophic Consequences on Syria Attack

Russia on Tuesday warned a military intervention in Syria could have "catastrophic consequences" for the region and called on the international community to show "prudence" over the crisis.

"Attempts to bypass the Security Council, once again to create artificial groundless excuses for a military intervention in the region are fraught with new suffering in Syria and catastrophic consequences for other countries of the Middle East and North Africa," a foreign ministry spokesman said.

"We are calling on our American partners and all members of the world community to demonstrate prudence (and) strict observance of international law, especially the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is known for his sharp tongue, said on Twitter that "the West behaves towards the Islamic world like a monkey with a grenade."

Earlier Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said that Moscow regretted Monday's decision by the US to postpone a meeting on the Syria crisis, as Western powers mulled military action over last week's chemical attack in Syria.

The scrapping of the meeting, which was due to take place at The Hague later in the week, is the latest sign of a new peak in tensions between Moscow and the West over the possibility of military strikes against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"It arouses regret that our partners decided to cancel the bilateral meeting," Gatilov said on Twitter. "Working out the parameters of a political solution in Syria would have been especially helpful right now, when military action is hanging over this country," Gatilov said.

In such a climate, it was especially important to work in concert to try to organise the repeatedly postponed peace conference bringing together the Damascus regime and the rebels, Lukashevich said.

"However, the United States' decision to postpone the meeting in The Hague is sending precisely the opposite signal to the opposition, encouraging their intransigence as they await outside intervention," he said.

Western countries including the United States are considering their response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by Assad's regime on August 21.

On Monday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned the "hysteria" over the claimed chemical attack and said the West had yet to come up with proof that Assad's regime was behind it. He also said Russia would not get involved in a military conflict in Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told British Prime Minister David Cameron in a telephone call on Monday there was no evidence yet that the Syrian regime had used chemical weapons against rebels, Cameron's office said.

News : LoC Attack, BJP Asks Antony To Apologize

NEW DELHI: Opposition BJP and UPA's outside supporter SP on Wednesday stalled Parliament over contradictory statements by defence minister A K Antony and Army over the killing of Indian soldiers on the Line of Control.

NEW DELHI: Opposition BJP and UPA's outside supporter SP on Wednesday stalled Parliament over contradictory statements by defence minister A K Antony and Army over the killing of Indian soldiers on the Line of Control.

BJP demanded that Antony should apologise for "toeing the Pakistani line" when he stated that the 5 Indian soldiers were killed by 20 heavily armed terrorists and persons in Pakistani army uniform, while an Indian Army statement said the terrorist were assisted by Pakistan Army.

As the Lok Sabha met for the day, leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj slammed Antony for giving Pakistan army a "clean chit" in the attack.

She said while an earlier statement by the Army and the defence ministry blamed terrorists and Pakistan army regulars for the attack, Antony said those involved in the incident were terrorists and people wearing Pakistan Army uniforms.

"The defence minister should apologise to the country," Swaraj said amid din over Telangana and law and order situation in West Bengal.

As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present in the House, Swaraj demanded a statement from him on the issue stating categorically that Pakistan army was involved in the attack on the Indian post in Poonch sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

In Rajya Sabha, members were on their feet the moment Chairman Hamid Ansari called the House to order.

M Venkaiah Naidu (BJP) said he has given a notice for suspension of Question Hour to raise the issue...

News : Edward Snowden 'safe and fine', says lawyer

Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden was safe and felt fine after leaving the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, his lawyer said.

"He has reached his location. He feels fine and is completely safe," Xinhua quoted lawyer Anatoly Kucherena as telling Interfax news agency.

On Thursday, Snowden was granted a one-year permit to stay in Russia following a month-long confinement in the airport's transit area.

An official invitation will also be sent to Edward's father Lon Snowden to come to Moscow, Kucherena said Friday.

"We have prepared almost all the documents. Invitations are to be sent to Lon Snowden and his defence attorney on my behalf to come to Moscow," Kucherena said.

Kucherena said that due to security reasons the time "has not come yet" to disclose Snowden's location.

Also on Friday, US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul met presidential aide Yuri Ushakov to discuss the latest developments in bilateral relations and the status of Snowden, the US diplomatic mission said. News : More Than 200 Escape From Pakistan Prison Attack

PESHAWAR — More than 200 prisoners escaped following a massive attack on one of the main prisons in northwestern Pakistan on Monday night, a senior security official said.

Authorities imposed a curfew in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, following an overnight attack on the 100-year-old central prison there, which housed more than 500 prisoners. All roads leading to neighboring restive tribal regions of North and South Waziristan were blocked off and a search operation has been launched, officials said, requesting they not be named.

“The attackers have melted away in the population,” one official acknolwledged.

More than 100 militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy arms rode in on motorbikes and vehicles and then blasted the prison walls and broke open locks on cells, freeing 243 prisoners including 30 militants, the security official said.

“They used megaphones to call names of their comrades in the lock-ups and then broke up their cells using explosives devices,” the official said.

Thirteen people were killed in the attack that began at around 11 p.m. and continued for three hours, the official said.

“There are explosives littered around the compound,” the official said.

Four policemen and five civilians were among the dead. Four prisoners who belonged to the minority Shia sect and had been charged in targeted killings were also identified and killed by militants, the official said. Another 13 people were wounded in the attack.

The attack was the second major prison raid in two years. In April last year, militants stormed a prison in neighbouring Bannu district, freeing nearly 400 prisoners...

News : Train Derailment in NW Spain; kills dozens

MADRID—A passenger train derailed Wednesday night on a curvy stretch of track in northwestern Spain, killing at least 40 people caught inside toppled cars and injuring at least 140 in the country's worst rail accident in decades, officials said.

A train traveling in northwestern Spain has derailed close to Santiago de Compostela.

Bodies were covered in blankets next to the tracks as rescue workers tried to get trapped people out of the train's cars. Some were pulled out of broken windows, and one man knelt atop a carriage lying on its side, using a pickax to try to break open a window. Images showed one car pointing up into the air with one of its ends twisted and disfigured. Another carriage that had been severed in two was lying on a road near the track.

Officials gave differing death tolls in the immediate aftermath of the crash just outside Santiago de Compostela, on the eve of the city's annual religious festival that attracts tens of thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the region of Galicia where Santiago de Compostela is the capital, said at least 40 people died. But the president of Galicia's main court, Miguel Angel Cadenas, was quoted from the scene by the Cadena Ser radio station saying 56 died. Rescue workers were still searching through the smoldering wreckage of the train's cars Thursday morning in the predawn darkness.

State-owned train operator Renfe said in a statement that 218 passengers and an unspecified number of staff were on board the eight-carriage train during the 8.41 p.m. crash on a section of tracks that came online two years ago.

Renfe and track operator Adif were collaborating with a judge who has been appointed to investigate the accident...

News : Heavy Rains Expected in Mumbai, Alerts from BMC

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. High tide is also expected on Wednesday afternoon.

There is a continuous rainfall in the city since Tuesday morning. According to TV reports some schools have been closed due to the continuous rain in Mumbai.

The MET has also warned fishermen not to venture in the sea.

The suburban trains in the city are running at least half an hour late on all three lines- Central, Western and Harbour.
The city witnessed very heavy showers on Tuesday, as it usually does every July.

And as it happens every year, once again BMC struggled to handle the usual flooding and traffic troubles, making commute a nightmare for Mumbaiites.

In 12 hours, between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Tuesday, the suburbs recorded a whopping 142.2mm of rainfall, while the island city received 84.6mm.

Despite the prediction of heavy rainfall and a warning that the sea would rise higher than usual during high tide in the afternoon, the agencies responsible were unprepared to deal with the situation.

The result was severe waterlogging, massive traffic jams and severely disrupted train services.

At least 27 spots across the city were heavily flooded, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Train services on the harbour line came to a halt in the afternoon and resumed only after the evening peak hours, while trains on the central line were running around 30 minutes behind schedule; western line services were also delayed.

Brace yourself for more trouble on Wednesday: the weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain for 72 hours and the sea will rise even higher today during high tide (4.95 metres at 1.27pm)...

Science : Slow Down in Global Warming, not by much!

London: Global warming has not stopped, but is just on pause, according to scientists, who have revealed that the Earth's rate of warming has slowed down.

Huge amounts of heat - equivalent to the power of 150 billion electric kettles - are being continuously absorbed by the deep ocean, which could explain why global warming has "paused" over the past 10 to 15 years, the Independent reported.

Global average temperatures are higher now than they have ever been since modern records began.

However, after a period of rapid temperature increases during the 1980s and 1990s there has been a significant slow-down since the turn of the century, leading some sceptics to claim that global warming has stopped.

A scientific assessment of the planet's heat balance has found that the most likely explanation for the recent hiatus in global warming is the continual absorption of thermal energy by the huge "heat sink" of the deep ocean many hundreds of metres below the sea surface, according to scientists from the Met Office.

Senior climate scientists said that they had always expected periods when the rate of increase in temperatures would level off for a few years and emphasised that the last decade was still warmer than any previous decade, with 12 of the 14 hottest years on record occurring since 2000.

Professor Rowan Sutton, a climate scientist at Reading University, said the temperatures have levelled off in the past, the latest example being in the 1940s and 1950s when sulphate pollutants from the post-war boom in industrial production may have acted as a shield against incoming solar radiation.

The problem for the Met Office is to explain why the rate of increase in global temperatures has declined in recent years while concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have continued to accelerate.

Sceptics claim that this shows there is not a strong link between the two, whereas climate scientists insist that rising carbon dioxide concentrations are largely responsible for the rise in global temperatures.

Professor Stephen Belcher, head of the Met Office Hadley Centre, said that a pause in the rate of increase in global temperatures lasting this long is unusual but not exceptional, with similar pauses of about 10 years expected on average twice every century...

News : NW China earthquake, claims 22 lives

LANZHOU, July 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people have been killed in an earthquake which hit a juncture region of two counties in northwest China's Gansu Province Monday morning, according to the provincial civil affairs department.

The victims include 19 in Minxian County, two in Zhangxian County in the city of Dingxi and Lixian County in the city of Longnan, according to the department.

Communication was cut off in 13 towns of Zhangxian County, it said.

The 6.6-magnitude quake happened at 7:45 a.m. at the junction of the Minxian County and Zhangxian County, the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 20 km, was monitored at 34.5 degrees north latitude and 104.2 degrees east longitude, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Sources with the Minxian County government said most of the townships in the county have been affected by the quake. The townships of Meichuan and Puma were seriously hit.

Many homes in the quake-hit region collapsed, according to the civil affairs bureau of the Dingxi City.

Locals in Minxian County said a strong tremor was felt and they saw trees and homes shake, adding that the quake lasted for about one minute.

Business : Infosys hikes the Salary , so does wipro!

BANGALORE: NR Narayana Murthy has made his first significant move upon returning to Infosys by effecting an unexpected round of wage increases for the company's 1.5 lakh employees. By doing so, analysts said, the Infosys chairman is trying to kill several birds with one stone, displaying tactical finesse that has earned him a reputation as one of India's canniest entrepreneurs.

On Thursday, less than a fortnight after Murthy came back to helm the company, Infosys announced an average increment of 8% for India employees, effective from July 1. For employees outside India, the company said the increments will be 3%, albeit with some riders. The biggest push was reserved for its global sales force which will get a raise of 8% effective May. Wipro, which announced increments in July last year, also sent a note about an hour after the news from Infosys. It said it is giving an average increment of 6-8% for offshore employees and 2-3% for onsite employees, effective from June 2013. For high-performers, the raise will be in double digits. A Wipro spokeswoman said the emailed note was in response to media queries.

"There have been serious issues with employee motivation levels at Infosys. Wipro rolling out wage hikes on the same day shows that it wants to ensure the company doesn't lose employees to Infosys," said Pradeep Mukerji, president and managing partner at outsourcing advisory firm Avasant. Infosys's populist move — a certain vote-winner among staff — could raise morale, enhance Murthy's stock of goodwill and send out a message to all stakeholders and rivals that the Infosys co-founder is back and means business. "By announcing wage hikes, Infosys wants to calm down anxiety among its employees and stabilize things within the organization. It is a smart move; however, we do not expect more bold moves from Murthy," said Manish Bahl, country manager at Forrester Research. "He will be focused on getting things aligned, talking to clients and creating expertise on the product innovation side."

Our Analysis

That is a great news after a long for the industry as the trend is supposed to be continued over to other giants and it will be a good time to do so. Again, thanks to the spike of USD in the international market, this has enabled the IT companies to have a better command over the financial situations.

Again, this might be a tactical move as the infosys share has not been doing great at the market and was easily brought down by leaders like TCS - so this move should keep the employees on their share and strike back to the market at right time.

Srinivasan Cornered : Two top officials of BCCI resigns

New Delhi/ Mumbai/ Chennai: The walls are closing in on Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) chief N Srinivasan after two top board officials - Treasurer Ajay Shirke and Secretary Sanjay Jagdale - quit on Friday evening. Other BCCI office-bearers also likely to resign forcing Srinivasan to call a board meeting early next week, say sources.

Shirke who was appointed by Srinivasan in the panel to investigate the complaints about players having link with the bookies. Both Shirke and Jagdale was also named as the most close associates of Srinivasan in BCCI, but with the two gone, it seems that Srinivasan will have a tough time. The board which has 18 members against Mr. Srinivasan holding the president post and 8 members with him. With the upcoming board meeting on June 8, that should seal the fate.

Again the resignation decision still rests in hands of Mr. Srinivasan as he can choose to hold on to the post, in which case, the board can appoint a intermediary committee which will monitor the boards operations until the investigations are complete. Following the resignation, Mr. Shirke told the media,

"This is just my decision. This has nothing to do with anything else. I was feeling very hurt, very upset [with the off-field issues]. I want to see cricket as a game," he said. "I had already requested the president to not keep me on the panel," said Jagdale and added that quitting the president's post is entirely Srinivasan's decision. "Frankly, I leave it to him. He has been in the game longer than me. I don't think there is any personal allegation against him."

"It's just the day I have resigned. It [working with a different president] will depend on the freedom or mindset of that president," Shirke said.
It was a crippling blow for the BCCI president who walked out of Chennai airport, into a media scrum and his hold over the cricket board slipping away rapidly. Not surprisingly, Srinivasan stayed quiet even as reports started to emerge that resignations of other key officials were inevitable.
