Vodafone Cuts Down The Data Tarrifs By 80%

Good news for the vodafone fans as the company has finally revealed its plans to cut the prices of the data and call rates. As a first move the data rates have been cut by 80%, the data rate which used to be 10ps/10kb will now be 2ps/10kb. The rates will be applicable from November 1st 2013 and will be available nationally.

Vodafone had cut international roaming charges a few days ago. In June, it had reduced data download prices in Karnataka, UP West and Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh circles. “Following the successful pilot launch in three circles in mid-June, this attractive and lowest mobile internet charge is now being rolled out pan-India,” said the company in a statement on Thursday.

Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular had reduced internet access tariffs in June by about 90% in some circles. Bharti Airtel reduced its tariff by 90% in Punjab and Haryana in June for 2G subscribers to one paise/10 kb from 10 paise/10kb. Idea Cellular also reduced mobile Internet access charges by 90% for its 2G subscribers in eight circles to 2 paise/10 kb.

We are yet to receive a counter operations from Bharti or Reliance communications, but since the competition is tough, we can expect a quick price cut in the coming weeks.

Verizon and Vodafone Planning $130 bn Wireless Deal

Verizon Communications agreed on Monday to pay $130 billion for the 45 per cent stake in Verizon Wireless owned by British cellphone carrier Vodafone.

Reuters reports: The deal in cash and stock will give Verizon full access to the profits from the United States' largest mobile operator, handing it fresh firepower to invest in its mobile network and fend off challengers in a tough market that is fast becoming even more competitive.

For the British group, the accord will allow it to return 71 per cent of the net proceeds - or $84 billion including all of the stock - to shareholders while also ramping up investment in its networks to set itself apart from rivals.

Under the terms, Vodafone will get $58.9 billion in cash, $60.2 billion in Verizon stock, and an additional $11 billion from smaller transactions in a deal that is due to close in the first quarter of next year.

The deal will become the third largest announced deal in the world after Vodafone's $203 billion takeover of Germany's Mannesmann in 1999 and AOL's $181 billion acquisition of Time Warner the following year. Verizon has also managed to raise one of the largest ever financing packages at $60 billion.

The deal, in which Verizon will buy Vodafone's 45 per cent stake in Verizon Wireless, is the defining event in the careers of Vittorio Colao and Lowell McAdam, the chief executives of Vodafone and Verizon, respectively. They had succeeded in rebuilding relations between the two sides, long strained by clashes about the Wireless dividend and who would eventually seize full ownership.

McAdam told Reuters in an interview that the two men had initially discussed the possibility of combining Verizon and Vodafone before deciding that the stake sale made more sense for both companies.

He said the companies realised they were close to a deal after they spent the morning together in a hotel in San Francisco, chatting while on the exercise bike in the gym and later over breakfast.

The code name assigned to the deal was Project River. "We were Hudson and they were the Thames," he said, referring to rivers in New York and London.

Vodafone on Monday partnered with Twitter to offer subscribers free access to the social networking website for three months. The move is part of Vodafone's initiative to drive mobile Internet adoption in the country.

Subscribers will be able to access and tweet without incurring data charges when they visit the Twitter website or the official Android app.

After a price war for offering the cheapest call rates, telecom operators are now aggressively pushing data services, especially 3G. Many operators, including Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance have already slashed usage charges to get more subscribers to consume data.

Last week, Vodafone launched its 'Be Smart' mobile internet initiative, under which it will reach out to customers talking about popular mobile applications like videos and music, navigation, social networking, online gaming and live stock market updates.

One of the popular social networking sites, Twitter allows users to share stories, ideas, opinions and news in 140 characters long messages...
