Kill Anxiety, Make The World Around You Smell Good

Anxiety stinks! Stress may not only make you smell bad, but also the world around you, a new study suggests.

The study shows that when people are anxious, smells they once found neutral become distasteful.

Scientists using powerful new brain imaging technologies have revealed how anxiety or stress can rewire the brain, linking centers of emotion and olfactory processing, to make typically benign smells malodorous.

Researchers led by Wen Li, a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Waisman Center, said that

the brains of human subjects experience anxiety induced by

disturbing pictures and text of things like car crashes and

war transform neutral odours to distasteful ones, fuelling a

feedback loop that could heighten distress and lead to clinical issues like anxiety and depression.

The finding is important because it may help scientists

understand the dynamic nature of smell perception and the

biology of anxiety as the brain rewires itself under stressful

circumstances and reinforces negative sensations and feelings.

"After anxiety induction, neutral smells become clearly negative," said Li.
"People experiencing an increase in anxiety show a decrease in the perceived pleasantness of odours. It becomes more negative as anxiety increases," Li said.

Using behavioural techniques and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Li's group looked at the brains of a dozen human subjects with induced anxiety as they processed known neutral odours.

Functional MRI is a technology that enables clinicians and researchers to observe the working brain in action.

In the course of the experiment, researchers observed that two distinct and typically independent circuits of the brain- one dedicated to olfactory processing, the other to emotion- become intimately intertwined under conditions of anxiety.
Subsequent to anxiety induction and the imaging process, subjects were asked again to rate the panel of neutral smells, most assigning negative responses to smells they previously rated as neutral.

Xbox One Looses To Playstation 4 Sales Says Survey

The restrictions and policies along with the price point may be costing Microsoft's Xbox One, as the latest poll by Reuters shows that people are more inclined to buy Sony's Playstation 4 than the much upgraded and policy implied Xbox One.

The poll was conducted from 23rd September to 27th September which revealed this stunning fact. Although Microsoft boasts about its much faster sensors, processor and graphics, it still comes at a cost - the most talked about implication was the requirement of internet connection to continue playing games, and ruled off the possibility of an offline pleasure. This has been received with much criticism, and made MS to rethink this policy. Here the Sony got the track and was promoting offline gaming as well at a $100 less of the price of Xbox One.

The poll showed 26 percent of 1,297 people surveyed online last week say they are likely to purchase the new PlayStation 4 when available, versus 15 percent opting for the Xbox One.

The interesting fact was that, among those below the age of 40. Of that group of 408 people, 41 percent picked Sony's PS4 versus 27 percent for Microsoft's Xbox One, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The Xbox policies had even surprised the Sony CEO(News Here) and this seems to have been the roar of the public. Sony Also have received 1 million preorders for the product, for which it was a proud moment(News Here).
But 56-year-old participant Jon Leigh, who plays six to 10 hours of video games a week and lives in Harlan, Kentucky, thinks the Microsoft controversy won't sway Xbox fans. "People who use Microsoft products will continue to use them," he said. Leigh will go with the Xbox One because of its upgraded "Kinect" motion sensor, and because he's more familiar with the Xbox than the PlayStation.

The $399 PS4 and $499 Xbox One represent the first major upgrades of mainstream gaming hardware in years, setting game developers scrambling to put out new releases that take advantage of better graphics and faster processors. They are scheduled to hit store shelves from mid-November, about a year after Nintendo's slow-selling Wii U. Of the 1,297 respondents, only 3 percent said they now played games on the Wii U, versus 20 percent on the Xbox 360, 20 percent on computers, and 18 percent on Sony's PlayStation 3.
Indeed, 64 percent of total respondents said they would not buy any new game hardware at all this season, when posed with choices ranging from the Xbox and PS4 to Nintendo's 2DS and Valve's Steam Box. The Reuters/Ipsos poll underscored strong interest in Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Ghosts," slated for November, which will try and take on Take-Two Interactive Software's mega-hit, "Grand Theft Auto V."

Venice Is Sinking 5x Faster, Confirms Sattelites

WASHINGTON: Modern satellites are helping scientists monitor how quickly Venice — the "floating city" of romance — is sinking with an unprecedented level of resolution. The results show the city is naturally subsiding at a rate of about 0.8 to 1 millimetre per year, while human activities contribute sinking of about 0.08 to 2 to 10 mm per year.

Researchers said the sinking threatens to increase flooding in Venice, which already occurs due to high tides about four times per year.

The satellite data has revealed the amount that Venice is sinking, allowing scientists to compare the influence of natural causes of the sinking, due to compaction of the sediments on which the city is built, and to man-made ones, such as building restoration.

Understanding how the land is sinking is particularly important in the face of rising sea levels. "Venice is in a situation so critical with respect to the sea that continuous monitoring of the city's movement is of paramount importance," said researcher Pietro Teatini from the University of Padua in Italy.

Scientists first recognised the problem decades ago when they noticed that pumping of groundwater from beneath Venice was causing the city to settle into the earth.

The pumping and its effects have long since stopped, but the city continues to sink, 'LiveScience' reported.
Researchers used two sets of satellite measurements of Venice's historical city center and the surrounding area.

The first dataset came from first-generation satellite sensors that have coarse resolution and collect data about once a month. The second one came from a newer satellite with sensors that have much better resolution and take measurements every 10 days, the report said.

Beware! Ads Coming On To Gmail Android App

Its inevitable, as long as there is an infrastructure to manage, google will have to incorporate ads. Right now the ads are churning up on the 'promotions' tab of your desktop gmail version and your android version has been pretty neat with nearly no ads. But the recent tear down by android police blogs show that there is provision for adding in ads!

We do not blame google for that but, its still unclear on how the ads will be getting added in. The debate is on whether it will be added in the same manner as your browser mail version. Another argument comes in that you may be able to select the ads which you like and save it. This will let you receive the new ads as general mail and there is an option to dislike an ad as well, although the programmers are in two minds on what this will be for.

Although these are just speculations over the upcoming change, for the version 4.6, android community is not in good moods with seeing its apps and mobile usage being added as a criteria for the ads they receive.

Besides advertisements, the APK teardown has revealed that users will now receive warnings about messages that have not been sent out yet. When you visit the Sent folder now, the Gmail team will warn you about messages in your Outbox that have been left behind, thanks to the lack of connectivity or bugs. This move is a great one on Google’s part and will help users know the status of their messages and hopefully avoid duplicates.
Other changes include a slight tweak to notifications of new emails in the drawer that will now show the first letter of the name in the picture thumbnail instead of a generic face and darker UI buttons. The cancel button when you try to send a mail has also been taken off, assuming you can still hit the Back button in case you change your mind.

Skin Needs Your Care Everyday, 5 Most Essentials For Skincare

If you depend on just fortnightly clean up sessions or the monthly facials to prep up your skin, you're not doing your skin any favours. Here are simple things that your skin needs everyday...

Moisturising
You skin is sensitive — take good care of it and nourish it with moisturisers. Moisturisng twice a day is important if you want your skin to look healthy, blemish-free and improve your complexion.

Water
When you drink water, it flushes out toxins from your body and allows cells to absorb vital nutrients. It also makes sure that your digestive system works properly. And your skin needs water the most to keep it hydrated. It also removes skin impurities, which cause acne and pimples and keeps the skin looking healthy and smooth. Ensure that you have at least eight to 10 glasses of water daily if you want glowing skin.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are found in fruits, vegetables, certain fish and oils. Antioxidants have free-radical-fighting activities, which kill molecules that damage healthy cells. Are you getting enough Vitamin C and E? While vitamin C helps build collagen for plump skin, Vitamin E protects cell membranes. Vit C is found in whole grains, apples and citrus fruits, while Vit E is present in wheat germ oil, almonds and peanut butter.
Sunscreen
No matter how cloudy or rainy it is outside, wearing sunscreen is a must 365 days of the year. Sunscreen not only protects you from skin cancer but also delays the signs of ageing that are caused due to sun exposure. So if you don't want discoloured, wrinkled, pigmented and flabby skin, ensure that you slap on that sunscreen no matter what. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it 20 minutes before you step out. Re-apply every few hours so that the effects are maximum.

Cleansing
If you want to remove dirt and grime from your skin and keep it oil free, daily cleansing is an absolute must. Cleansing also removes the residue of all the skin products you use and keeps your skin looking fresh and clean. Use a cleanser that suits your skin type and is soap-free so that it is gentle on your face. Women with extra dry skin should opt for a creamy cleanser while those with sensitive skin should opt for an alcohol-free cleanser. If you have an oily skin, use an acidic cleanser, which breaks up sebum — your skin's oily secretion that causes clogged pores. When you use a cleanser, gently massage it into your face for about 30 seconds so it gives good results.

Hindutva Is Not The Agenda, Its Development For All That Is Planned : Modi

Hardcore governance, and not Hindutva or shades of it, would figure in the BJP’s main battle theme for the Delhi elections as well as the 2014 polls, BJP prime minister candidate Narendra Modi indicated on Sunday.

At his first rally in Delhi since becoming the party’s face for the elections, Modi gave out the slogan, ‘Nation First, India First’ in response to the demand to declare the BJP’s plank. He also announced that the BJP’s new slogan would be “saab ke saath and saab ke vikas” (With all, and for everyone’s development.)

Hindustan Times had reported on September 15, two days after he was named PM candidate, that Modi slogan will be "”India First” -- for shaping the new governmental policies in key sectors.

Modi’s emphasis on Sunday was also that “there is only one religion for the government -- Nation First and India First. There is only one philosophy for the government -- Nation First and India First. There is only one holy book, the Constitution of India. Nothing else matters or will matter. There is only one credo -- care of every one of 125 crore Indians.”

Modi’s heavy development dose comes in the backdrop of hitherto-not disclaimed reports from Ahmedabad that the Gujarat chief minister has conveyed to some Muslim leaders that issues like Ram temple were not his party’s main plank and they should have no misgivings about any discrimination under future BJP dispensation.
Modi on Sunday spoke about what should be the development goal when India enters the 75th year of its existence as a nation in 2022. Saying that in the next nine years, the government must have a vision that guarantees every person a decent life free of worries about food, shelter or work, Modi talked of the “Great Indian Dream”, urging every village and town to aspire for a better life. He vowed that neither the BJP nor he would break that dream.

The thrust of Modi’s rally address was that “if you deliver good governance, there will be growth; if you deliver good governance, there will be economic opportunities, development and everything else.”

Rajasthan Royals Makes It Way to Semi Finals : CLT20

Rajasthan Royals will have to thank the young talent Sanju Samson and Ajinkya Rahane to the wonderful win that they managed to attain after a clear loss by the prime order batsmen. Rahul Dravid was humble to thank the youngsters and their professionalism which, as per his words was a clinical finish to the proceedings.

With this win, Rajasthan Royals manage to reach the semi finals of Champions League Twenty20. "It's nice to win and play well. It was a really good and clinical performance today. We can always improve and we can keep getting better, we also take a lot of satisfaction from the match today," said Dravid after the match.

"Our bowlers pulled it back brilliantly today, like Jimmy, Coops and a lot of professionalism from Samson and Rahane who batted very well," Dravid said.

"Our next game is a big one and Otago is playing very good cricket, they are the team in form."

Ajinkya Rahane, who was the top-scorer for Rajasthan, said: "It was a really nice pitch, good for bowlers and batsmen. This wicket was not fast compared to what we played against Mumbai Indians but the ball was doing a bit and holding its line.

"It was slightly tough initially but was easier later to bat on. I enjoy batting with Sanju, we were just talking about positive cricket while batting. We just need to concentrate on the next game and stay positive."

Kevon Cooper, who laid the foundation for the win with a four-wicket haul to help his team bundle out the Scorchers for 120, said: "I'm happy to come out here and bowl well and give my team a chance of winning.
"The yorker is something I practiced a lot, it's very important in this format. It's great to play with players like Dravid, Watson and we sit and plan every game with the support staff. We wanted to play good cricket here and happy to do that," he added.

After suffering their third loss in as many matches, Perth skipper Simon Katich said they were around 60 runs short and their bowlers too failed to contain the run.

"We are learning the hard way, we didn't get many partnerships going and were about 50-60 short there. Our bowlers tried their best but nothing worked. We presented four caps the other day and that in itself is tough.

"Hopefully we'll get a fair bit of this before the Big Bash. We've seen how big the standard is here form the Big Bash and it's a different ball game. We're gonna have to try harder in the next few days," he added.

"Some of the teachers told them they would be more productive at home than coming to school," said their mother and former journalist Jyothi Lakshmi. But they are clear they will attend classes regularly, and also pursue their love for cricket and the keyboard. They admire Dhoni for his aggressive play. Ordinance Is Nonsense, Should Be Thrown Away - Rahul Gandhi Against Govt's Ordinance For Convicted Leaders

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi dropped a bombshell on Friday by saying that the ordinance passed by his cabinet to shield convicted lawmakers from disqualification "is a complete nonsense" and that "it should be torn up and thrown away."

His statement comes after reports of a growing unease in the Congress over the ordinance started doing the rounds. Union minister Milind Deora and Congress leader Anil Shastri have already gone public with their reservations on the ordinance. Even senior Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh has called for a consensus.

Gandhi made his statement after making a surprise brief appearance at a meet-the-press programme of his party's general secretary Ajay Maken at the Press Club in the national capital.

"Now, I will tell you what is my opinion on the ordinance. It is complete nonsense, it should be torn up and thrown away. It is my personal opinion," he said. Rahul said that the argument given in "my organisation"
is that "we need to do this because of political considerations. Everybody is doing this. The Congress does this, the BJP does this, the Samajwadi Party, the JD(U) does this."

"It is time to stop this nonsense, political parties, mine and all others....If you want to fight corruption in the country whether it is Congress Party or BJP, we cannot continue making these small compromises. Because if we make these small compromises, then we compromise everywhere."

Earlier on Thursday, President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday called in three senior ministers for clarifications on the recent ordinance passed by the cabinet to shield convicted lawmakers from disqualification as the BJP urged him to return the proposal.

The government is finding itself in a spot with the opposition turning up the heat on it for overturning a Supreme Court judgment that ordered immediate disqualification of MPs/MLAs convicted in a criminal case punishable by two years or more in jail.
For the ordinance to become a law, it has to be signed by the President. If the cabinet resends it, the President would have no choice but to sign it.

Thursday evening was busy for the President. First, top BJP leaders registered their protest over what they termed was "an unconstitutional move" and then senior ministers were called in to explain the reasons behind the decision. The President, it is learnt, is treading with caution.

Mukherjee is not entirely convinced with the government's ordinance move, and is learnt to have sought some clarifications from home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, law minister Kapil Sibal and parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath after the BJP requested the President to send the ordinance back to the cabinet, sources told HT.
