Could the slicklogin acquisition mean demise of passwords?

The popular shopper, google Inc has gone shopping once again to Israel to pick up one of the unique login features introduced. As the developers say, it may sound insane at start, but slick login was a firm which used unique sounds which when played through the speakers of mobile phone or computer will allow the software to identify the person.

This is considered safe, mentioning that the sound is not audible to human ears and can only be picked up by the microphone or phone. With this acquisition, experts consider this as a demise of password and could very well replace the now used password security.

Although google has implemented the 2-step verification for free, the stick login feature will be a added security option.

SlickLogin announced the acquisition on its website but did not disclose how much the deal was worth.

'Today we`re announcing that the SlickLogin team is joining Google,' the statement read.

'[Google] shares our core beliefs that logging in should be easy instead of frustrating, and authentication should be effective without getting in the way.

Google has always had a soft spot for Israel and it was revealed with their recent acquisitions like speadsheet company iRows, LabPixies entertainment, and mapping service Waze.

We are just gazing at the stars on what or when this new authentication is going to come in effect!

Motorola one of the leaders during early stages of mobile phones had gone down to a near fall with the invasion of Chinese, Korean, Finnish and Indian mobile manufacturers entering the market. It failed to cope up with the growing pace. But Motorola has found a new life line with its google acquisition and even better may be in store as Google has handed this over to Lenovo.

With China's Lenovo having bought Motorola Mobility for $2.9 billion recently, industry observers say that the company may be playing safe by only launching online till integration of businesses happen and not expending its resources towards distribution, which is a must for any mobile phone company to survive in the hyper-competitive Indian market.

"There are too many players and original equipment makers (OEMs) in the Indian market and the distribution channels are fatigued with the large number of devices being retailed countrywide," said Jayanth Kolla, co-founder and partner at telecom research firm Convergence Catalyst.

Google Chrome Security Vulnerability Can Listen, Process And Record Your Voice!

A developer Tal Ater, an Israeli entrepreneur and web developer, found the bug on the web browser by chance. Ater was working on developing a speech recognition plugin when he discovered this bug and this is quite a serious one as well. Ater demonstrates that once you allow microphone settings for the browser, it remembers the setting for any other sites, without asking permissions!

So literally your conversations can be recorded live and the post also goes to say that the recording can be triggered using specific keywords as well, and whenever you speak one such keyword, the site can record the data and process it and also save/send it! Quite scary.

Tal Ater, did report this issue to google developers and as per his post. Google, the tech giant originally thanked him and even nominated him for a prize for his diligence. Along with this the bug fix was also developed by the google developers, after identifying the root issue, but unfortunately to-date, this has not been provided to end users.

On constant queries from Ater, he was updated that the issue is being discussed by Standards Group. The discussions are still going on how to launch the update without any legal issues, but till then the chrome browsers continue to be vulnerable!

Ater believes it is a major security concern, but Google seem to think otherwise. NDTV tried to replicate the problem and succeeded, highlighting the issue of the Google Chrome bug that allows hackers to record voice communications.

Iphone although it has been booming int the market, our personal feel is that its none other than an older technology still in the halo of great Steve Jobs. The phone hasn't been able to compete much with the android techs and has been adding in peripherals to match the competitors.

Google Nexus 5 Goes Out Of Stock In Hours!

The Google Nexus 5 has been seeing a record breaking sale yesterday, as soon as few hours, the stock got cleared yesterday. It seems that the google play underestimated the Indian market when it brought in the stock.

The product as of now is out of stock we hope that the stock will be filled in shortly by the google team. The latest phone which has created quite a vibe with its stunning features and the low price tag. The phone is surely a winner already.

The sales number could not be ascertained. Nexus 5 is the first device powered by the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. The 16GB model of Nexus 5 would be available for Rs 28,999, while the 32GB model would cost Rs 32,999.

Beware! Ads Coming On To Gmail Android App

Its inevitable, as long as there is an infrastructure to manage, google will have to incorporate ads. Right now the ads are churning up on the 'promotions' tab of your desktop gmail version and your android version has been pretty neat with nearly no ads. But the recent tear down by android police blogs show that there is provision for adding in ads!

We do not blame google for that but, its still unclear on how the ads will be getting added in. The debate is on whether it will be added in the same manner as your browser mail version. Another argument comes in that you may be able to select the ads which you like and save it. This will let you receive the new ads as general mail and there is an option to dislike an ad as well, although the programmers are in two minds on what this will be for.

Although these are just speculations over the upcoming change, for the version 4.6, android community is not in good moods with seeing its apps and mobile usage being added as a criteria for the ads they receive.

Besides advertisements, the APK teardown has revealed that users will now receive warnings about messages that have not been sent out yet. When you visit the Sent folder now, the Gmail team will warn you about messages in your Outbox that have been left behind, thanks to the lack of connectivity or bugs. This move is a great one on Google’s part and will help users know the status of their messages and hopefully avoid duplicates.

Other changes include a slight tweak to notifications of new emails in the drawer that will now show the first letter of the name in the picture thumbnail instead of a generic face and darker UI buttons. The cancel button when you try to send a mail has also been taken off, assuming you can still hit the Back button in case you change your mind.

The Humming Bird Algorigthm On The Roll For Google Search

Menlo Park, California: Google has quietly retooled the closely guarded formula running its Internet search engine to give better answers to the increasingly complex questions posed by Web surfers. The overhaul came as part of an update called “Hummingbird” that Google Inc has gradually rolled out in the past month without disclosing the modifications.

The changes could have a major impact on traffic to websites. Hummingbird represents the most dramatic alteration to Google’s search engine since it revised the way it indexes websites three years ago as part of a redesign called “Caffeine,” according to Amit Singhal, a senior vice president for the company. He estimates that the redesign will affect the analysis of about 90 percent of the search requests that Google gets.

Any reshuffling of Google’s search rankings can have sweeping ramifications because they steer so much of the Internet’s traffic. Google fields about two of out every three search requests in the US and handles an even larger volume in some parts of Europe. The changes could also drive up the price of Google ads tied to search requests if websites whose rankings are demoted under the new system feel they have to buy the marketing messages to attract traffic.

The search ads and other commercial pitches related to Web content account for most of Google’s revenue, which is expected to approach $60 billion this year. Google disclosed the existence of the new search formula Thursday at an event held in the Menlo Park, California, garage where CEO Larry Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin started the company 15 years ago. Google celebrates its birthday on 27 September each year, even though the company was incorporated a few weeks earlier.

The company is now based in Mountain View, California, at a sprawling complex located about seven miles from the 1,900-square-foot home where Page and Brin paid $1,700 per month to rent the garage and a bedroom.

The co-founders’ landlord was Susan Wojcicki, who is now a top Google executive and Brin’s sister-in-law. Wojcicki sold the home to Google in 2006 and it is now maintained as a monument to the company’s humble beginnings.

Google Quickoffice App Is Now Free For Everyone!

Google is trying to make it easier for everyone to work together, even those who "haven't gone Google yet."

The company on Thursday announced that its Quickoffice mobile app, for viewing and editing Microsoft Office files, is now free to anyone with a Google account.

Previously, the app was only free to Google Apps for Business subscribers -- everyone else had to shell out $14.99 for the pro version or $19.99 for the pro HD version.

As a bonus, Google is offering an extra 10GB of Google Drive storage for the next two years to anyone who signs up their Google account for the new Quickoffice app by September 26.

Quickoffice for iOS and Android lets users create, view, and edit Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files on their mobile devices. The app is also integrated with Google Drive so files can be stored and accessed across devices.

Google added a few new features to the app as well, including the ability to create ZIP folders and view charts in PowerPoint and Excel. Google said people already using Quickoffice for Google Apps for Business can update to the new app.

Google acquired Quickoffice in June 2012 and has been expanding its availability ever since. While the company is clearly investing resources in the software, its long-term goals still appear aimed at transitioning people to using its Web-based productivity tools.

"Converting old files to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is still the easiest way to share and work together, and we're working every day to make the files you convert look better," Alan Warren, engineering VP of Google Drive, wrote in a blog post.

Today the ‘o’s of Google have been replaced with a cartoon image of a box containing both an alive and dead cat.

The Schrödinger’s Cat paradox was used to illustrate the practical problems surrounding the ‘Copenhagen interpretation’ of quantum mechanics, which suggests that a particle exists in all states at once until observed.

In the mind experiment, a cat is left in a box with a radioactive sample which may or may not decay and trigger the smashing of a bottle of poison. According to the Copenhagen interpretation, the cat is both alive and dead until the box is opened, but common sense would suggest this is not the case.

Schrödinger’s Cat has also been widely influential in popular culture, with references to it in TV shows such as Futurama, Doctor Who and The Big Bang Theory as well as appearing in the works of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

In recent years it has been the subject of a series of online jokes, such as the Wild West-style poster: “WANTED. Schrödinger’s cat: dead or alive. Last seen before box was closed.”

Or this take on the 2011 pop hit Call Me Maybe: “Hey I just met you/Your theory’s crazy/But here’s my cat/He’s dead maybe.”...

Technology : Moto X Launched

The much anticipated smartphone that also takes the title of being the worst-kept secret in recent times is finally here. Well sort of. Motorola today unveiled the Moto X, the first smartphone made after Google announced it was acquiring the company almost exactly two years ago. To be available initially in the US for $199 with a two-year contract and in Canada and Latin America (sorry, no word on India launch but we’d suggest not holding your breath for it), the Moto X aspires to be the iPhone of the Android world. Rather than concentrating on specifications, Motorola claims it is looking at enhancing experiences. The core propositions being a battery that lasts all day, a camera that clicks great photos and a user experience that does not require users to touch the phone to get information.

Rather than going for the most expensive silicon, the Moto X is powered by a custom Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor that has two Krait 300 cores clocked at 1.7GHz and a quad-core Adreno 320 GPU. Along with this, Motorola has added two additional DSPs – one that always listens for “OK Google Now” command to fire up Google Now and another that keeps a track of the phone’s motion to power up the information display or turn on the camera. Motorola calls it the Motorola X8 Mobile processor.

For a touch-free experience, users can simply use the command “OK Google Now” even when the phone is in sleep mode that wakes it up and will initiate Google Now. The phone’s information display also turns on when the user picks it up or takes it out from the pocket to display the time and notification icons. Rather than keeping the main processor turned on all the time, the Moto X uses the two low-power DSPs for these tasks, ensuring there is minimal battery drain.

Then there is the camera, which Motorola claims enables the users to click a photo from the lock screen in the shortest time when compared to rival smartphones. A flick of the wrist signals the phone that a user wants to click a photo and turns on the camera automatically. Motorola is touting a 10-megapixel Clear Pixel (RGBC) camera, which it claims takes better low-light photographs. There is a 2-megapixel front facing camera too.

Surprisingly, despite being a Google company, the Moto X still runs Android 4.2.2. Yes, Google had promised that Motorola will get access to Android at the same time as its other OEM partners but it remains to be seen how long the charade lasts. Thankfully, Android 4.3 has been a minor update and we will get to know for sure whether the wall between Google and Motorola Mobility indeed exists or if it is a mere smokescreen for other OEMs.

Talking about hardware specs (yes, despite focusing purely on experience, the specifications are important too) we are looking at a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED 720p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,200mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. We have already visited the processor and camera.

Motorola is also offering users over 2,000 customization options where they can choose the back panel (there’s a wooden option too), the accents, engraving and much more. This is limited to the US for the moment and it remains to be seen whether Motorola extends it to other markets as well.

The Moto X marks the beginning of a trend when Android device vendors finally understand that importance of user experience over core hardware specifications. But, as things would have it, we are not sure if users are ready to accept what’s eventually good for them. After all, most pay for the hardware they get and the market value of a smartphone is still pegged on the basis of the hardware it runs rather than its capabilities and the experience it provides. And that is where Motorola probably lost the opportunity. It could have passed on the cost savings of using last year’s hardware to potential customers rather than matching the price tags of today’s flagship smartphones...

Tech : Google Pays tribute to Rosalind Franklin, DNA Scientist

Rosalind Franklin, a British biophysicist and x-ray crystallographer helped discover the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) but controversially missed out on the Nobel prize.

Born on July 25, 1920 in Notting Hill, London, Rosalind Franklin was the second child and eldest daughter of her parents who belonged to an affluent and influential British Jewish family.

Franklin's scientific work lead to X-ray diffraction images of DNA which resulted in the discovery of the DNA double helix.

DNA plays an important part in cell metabolism and genetics. The discovery of its structure helped Franklin's co-workers understand how genetic information is passed from parents to children. This has today helped medical science make a lot of progress.

Besides this Franklin's studies also helped in the understanding of the molecular structures of RNA, viruses, coal and graphite.

In April 1958, at the age of 37, the biophysicist died of ovarian cancer. Franlin worked at King's College London under Maurice Wilkins as she conducted her DNA research. Wilkins with his friends Francis Crick and James Watson were awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1962 for their DNA study. Crick later acknowledged that the trio used Franklin's images and they were "the data we actually used" to formulate the hypothesis regarding the structure of DNA.

Eliminating its competitors, Google has once again found the best deal in free disk world. The flat 15G free disk space shared over Google+, Gmail and Google Drive. One of the best deals that you could get compared to the Microsoft SkyDrive users get 7GB, and Apple iCloud, Amazon Cloud Storage, and SugarSync offer 5GB for free.

The move by Google is marked as a game changer as this eliminates its potential competitors off the business. Although there are questions raised on how or why this change is done, there may be an underlying business strategy but as web world recognizes Google, there wouldn't be anything evil on its path.

It is not just the free side that is receiving a boost, the Google Apps accounts will see a 30G drive instead of the traditional 25G. So its all win-win at the moment. And the new drive space should already be active(in India).
