Dirty Picture to be aired - 100 cuts from CBFC

The much celebrated premiere of 'The Dirty Picture' on star plus was earlier stalled by Censor Board of Film certification in April. As the movie had done 56 cuts already and still been given an U/A certificate, which makes it unfit for screening on television, (news here).

Much to the happiness of the movie fans, the film has now cleared the legal hassle of getting an universal certificate and should be aired on television pretty soon.

Sources said the producers of the Vidya Balan starrer approached the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) volunteering an additional 40 cuts. Certain words have been muted while 3-4 minutes of the film have been chopped off. The film had got 59 cuts in April but had been given a U/A certificate with a rider that it be screened only post-11 pm. The rider has now been withdrawn and a universal certificate given to the film.

The movie is now fit for airing on television but it might miss the essence as a whole. "The Board allowed them to make those deletions and made the endorsement to that effect on the film's certificate. The film can now be shown during general viewing hours on television," an official said.

Officials said under Rule 33 of the Cinematographic Act, filmmakers can re-submit their films for certification after making additions or deletions to the films.

In normal circumstances, changes which amount to an addition or deletion of up to 5 to 7 minutes are allowed and the Board certifies the new version of the movie. The I&B ministry had to step in to stop screening of 'The Dirty Picture' on prime time TV after an April 19 order of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had asked the ministry to ensure that the telecast of the movie did not violate guidelines.

So the hurdle is past now, the board is also looking at defining the guidelines to certification past the episode and is to ensure that the right movies gets broadcast and also ensure that the proper parental guidance is notified while airing U/A certificate movies.

Dirty Picture to be aired on TV after 56 cuts

After having cut as many as 56 scenes from the popular movie 'The Dirty Picture', Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Friday decided against staying the telecast of 'The Dirty Picture' on Sunday. 

Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court bench here has allowed a private TV channel (Sony Entertainment) and others to go ahead with the scheduled telecast of Vidya Balan starrer Hindi film 'The Dirty Picture' on Sunday.

The channel was responding to notices issued by the HC on a petition filed by a Nagpur resident, Pravin Dahat. The petitioner had knocked the judiciary's doors contending that 'The Dirty Picture' promos were full of obscene scenes, double meaning and vulgar dialogues, and the movie had received an 'Adult' certificate.  Therefore, it was not suitable for viewing with family, especially children. He termed its screening as breach of Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and Cable TV Network Rules, 1994.

Counsels for petitioner M Anil Kumar and Nirbhay Chawhan pointed out that the movie, as its name suggests, was indeed a "dirty picture" not suitable for home viewing due to its explicit scenes and vulgar dialogues. They added that even the songs were having double meaning with wild gestures and sounds of moaning.

The channel and Balaji Telefilms lawyer Sunil Manohar told the court during the hearing today that 56 adult scenes were cut from the film for the telecast, which now will be shown as ‘UA certified’. The total length of the film after cuts now is 136.54 minutes.

However Sony Entertainment channel has assured the Bombay High Court that the broadcast of the Dirty Picture on will be with UA certificate and without 56 “adult” scenes.
