Mumbai Youth, The Most Susceptible to Heart Diseases - A Survey

In a three-year-long study conducted in 12 cities across India, it has been found that 51 per cent of Mumbaikars have low levels of the heart-protecting high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as ‘good’ cholesterol. The study has also revealed that over 70 per cent of the urban Indian population is at the risk of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease.

The Saffola Life study covered more than 1.86 lakh people between the ages of 30 and 100. “A sedentary lifestyle, in addition to stressful work conditions and a compromised diet are leading factors in precipitating heart disease risk. This has affected the heart health of people between the ages of 30 and 44,” said Dr Akshay Mehta, senior cardiologist, Asian Heart Hospital.

Of the 29,017 Mumbaikars who participated in the study, 44 per cent reported that they consume preserved or processed foods at least twice a week, and 42 per cent said that they eat fried foods at least twice a week. Additionally, 71 per cent of them were guilty of consuming two or less servings of fibre-rich whole grains in their diet.

“Now it is fairly common to see youth suffering from heart strokes. Five years ago, we hardly saw young patients with heart problems. Now, we get many cases where cardiovascular disease affects people in the age group of 25 to 35,” said Dr Ajay Chaurasia, head of cardiology department, BYL Nair Hospital.

The study also revealed that at 12 per cent, Mumbai was one of the cities with the least number of respondents with diabetes, which experts see as a good sign. The study also showed that Mumbaikars are keen on keeping themselves fit, with a substantial 64 per cent of respondents agreeing that they exercise thrice a week or less.

Kuch Spice....Online !!!

Kuch Spice To Make It Meetha is the first commercial venture which is officially being released on-line. Its a 25-minute short-film. The movie released online on February 29, can be watched in any part of the world.

First-time director Adeeb Rai says, “There are rapid changes happening in the entertainment industry and I wanted to exploit the online medium. We wanted to tap the pulse of the GenX viewers. Marriage is a big question on every youngster’s mind. It leads to confusion, conflicts and friction. So in this film, we talk about all of this and how to make it meetha !”

23 year old Adeeb, a fresher from a film school started working on this project a year ago. Working on a shoe-string budget, he didn’t have the luxury to splurge like other filmmakers. He said, “The actors did not take a rupee from me”. So did Adeeb Rai choose to release the film online because of budget constraints ? He says, “I never thought of releasing it in multiplexes. It is not a niche, festival film meant for a small audience. It had to reach the masses. So the best way was to release it online. It wasn’t the small budget. If I had chosen multiplexes, then it would have released in just one city.”

The actors say it was his enthusiasm that led them to be part of the project. “His extra enthusiastic nature lured us into the project. We never thought of doing it for popularity. In fact the online release is a bonus,” says Nauheed. She plays the character of city-bred Tarana. “It is a fun character and the subject is something that youngsters will relate to”. For Adeeb Rai and his young crew, it is their grand debut in the Hindi film industry.

The story of Kuch Spice To Make it Meetha revolves around a hotly debated topic, 'The attitude today’s youths have towards marriage and commitment'. His next film, Main Aur Mr Riight has a strong connection with Bengaluru and will go on floors this April.

The director hopes that this movie throws open opportunities for people who have new and different ideas but are unable to execute them either because of financial constraints or lack of support from the industry. “This initiative should encourage filmmakers and technicians to showcase their talent.”

Akshay Does this for Social Cause!

kshay kumar, the name brings his action moments and the wonderful humor that he has done for us. But this time Akki has took up another issue quite seriously. He feels that the current youth is more tending to habits like smoking or liquor, the actor himself tries to do away from these habits. Akshay Kumar was talking to his fans through his blog, he said that the youth is abusing their bodies with the consumption of alcohol and falling for smoking habits.

He feels that the toll for these habits done in youth stage will be in the later stages of life and it is very miserable stage to be in. The actor was elaborating the topic and also mentioned the efforts of his younger cousin who has recently made a short movie explaining the consequences of smoking and other ill habits.

The actor blogged, "My little cousin brother and his mates have made a short film about 'Smoking Kills', can't tell you how proud I am. In minutes they made me realize how we all take our bodies for granted, be it drinking, smoking or even just over-eating! And how we all think 'Nothing will ever happen to me', well sadly it does.

The actor feels that society underestimates what the youth goes through these days and the efforts and stress they have to pass through, this is no excuse, but most of the time it is either death of someone near, a love affair or exams that tend to increase this habit. The actor feels that this should stop.

Akki mentions that if any of you know someone who is tend to these habits then make every effort to give it away. He says "The Joy of Giving week is coming soon, if you love your family, then give them the gift of longer and healthier life".

Akshay concluded by saying, "Everyone out there thank you for reading this, this is not a lecture, this is just me giving a few minutes of compassion to the people who I care about and that is you... Take care, always."
