Apple Completes The Acquisition Of 3D-Sensor Company, PrimeSense

Apple acquires the famous PrimeSense startup from Israel for $360 Million! Primesense is a company which is mainly focused on 3-D sensor technology. Most of the Xbox fans will be aware of this technology which is used in Xbox 3D Kinect games.

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed the PrimeSense deal with the boilerplate comment the company typically provides when news of one of its acquisitions leaks: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

The exit marks the end of months of deliberation between the two companies, finally bringing the semiconductor company responsible for advances in motion and depth capture under Apple’s aegis.

The talks were first reported by Israeli news outlet Calcalist back in July, and news of the acquisition was reported earlier on Sunday by Globes.

Microsoft’s Kinect gaming product, which uses cameras and depth sensors to capture players’ motions and incorporate them into Xbox gameplay. (Microsoft now deploys its own homegrown sensor technology for the current generation of Kinect devices, which ship with the recently launched Xbox One.)

This is not the first Israeli-based acquisition Apple has made. The Cupertino, Calif.-based hardware giant purchased Anobit — a supplier of high-performance flash memory controllers — earlier this year for a reported sum of $500 million.

Lack Of Supplies, Onion Prices Still Stay High

New Delhi: Onion prices in the national capital continue to remain high at Rs 70-80 per kg as supplies are still under pressure.

Prices of the kitchen staple in Azadpur mandi, Asia's largest wholesale market, were ruling at Rs 60 per kg today as supplies were below normal.

"Today, there was a marginal increase in the supplies of onion at 9,500 quintals, but that was insufficient to bring down the prices," Onion Merchant Traders Association President Surendra Budhiraj said.

He said the prices are likely to remain at this level for the next 10-15 days as most of the stored quantities from last year's crop have been exhausted and fresh supplies from South India are yet to reach the consuming states.

Traders also attributed the rise in wholesale onion prices to increase in prices of the bulb in Lasalgaon Mandi in Nashik, which sets the price trend across the country.

At Mother Dairy outlets in the city, onions are being sold at Rs 65-67 per kg, while local vendors are selling it at 70-80 per kg, depending upon the quality and location.

According to National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation data, prices of the politically sensitive commodity at Lasalgaon in Nashik, slightly declined from Rs 58 per kg to Rs 56 per kg today.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Ministry had said in the status report on onions that prices are under pressure as 90 per cent of stored onions from last year's crop are exhausted and only 3-4 lakh tonnes are available for consumption.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation had risen for the third straight month to 6.1 per cent in August, driven by a whopping 244.62 per cent jump in onion prices on an annual basis.

Tata Sons $51 Million Investment With Singapore Airlines

New Delhi: Nearly two decades after their first attempt to operate an airline in India fell by the wayside, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines announced on Thursday that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up a full-service airline.

A statement by the partners said they have applied for Foreign Investment Promotion Board approval.

This is the third proposal in the aviation sector since the Government allowed foreign carriers to acquire a 49 per cent stake in domestic airlines last September.

Initially, the board of the proposed airline will have three members, two from Tata Sons and one from Singapore Airlines.

Prasad Menon, Director, Tata Industries and former Managing Director, Tata Power, will be Chairman. Mak Swee Wah, Executive Vice-President, Commercial, will be Singapore Airlines’ nominee to the board.

Commenting on the development, Mukund Rajan, Member, Group Executive Council, Tata Sons, said: “Tata Sons will fully participate in the management and operations of the airline.”

‘NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST’

Asked whether the launch of the new airline would not lead to a conflict of interest with Tata Sons’ three-way joint venture with AirAsia and Telstra Tradeplace for a low-cost airline, a Tata Sons spokesman said: “The two airlines do not compete in the same space. AirAsia has been fully aware of this joint venture and has no objection to the partnership.”

Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh told newspersons that aviation rules do not bar the Tatas from having two ventures and added that it was a matter for the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Corporate Affairs Ministry.

The proposed airline could still face some hurdles as the Ministry of Civil Aviation had earlier argued that the change in FDI policy was meant to provide a lifeline to existing airlines and not start new ones.

BJP Member of Parliament Subramanian Swamy has moved a Public Interest Litigation in the Delhi High Court against the venture with AirAsia over the same issue.

A senior Government official, however, felt the entry of Tata Sons with Singapore Airlines and Jet Airways’ tie-up with Etihad would change the domestic aviation market. “Given the cost structures here, you require people not only with deep pockets but also with experience in the airline business,” the official said, declining to be named.

Twitter All Set To Go Public - Files S1 to SEC

Twitter Inc has filed for an initial public offering with U.S. regulators, the company said on Thursday, taking the first step toward what would be Silicon Valley's most anticipated debut since Facebook Inc's last year.

The impending IPO of the microblogging phenomenon ignited a competition among Wall Street's biggest names for the prestige of managing its coming-out party.

Goldman Sachs is lead underwriter, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday, which is a major coup for the Wall Street bank.

Twitter filed for an IPO confidentially under a 2012 law intended to help emerging corporations with less than $1 billion in revenue go public.

Seven-year old Twitter, which allows users to send out streams of 140-character messages, has become an indispensable tool to governments, corporations and celebrities seeking to communicate with their audience, and for individuals seeking both news and entertainment.

Chief Executive Dick Costolo has for years waved off suggestions it intended to go public, saying the company remained flush with cash. Facebook's mismanaged 2012 debut and subsequent share-price plunge also chilled the consumer-dotcom IPO market.

Facebook, however, has clawed its way back to its $38 IPO price in July, and the stock is at a record high after touching $45 this week.

Twitter, which has been valued by private investors at more than $10 billion, should break even this year and is on track for 40 per cent annual growth at a $1 billion annual revenue run rate, Max Wolff of Greencrest Capital estimated.

"It's completely conquered mobile. It has an enormous social network. It's becoming a key utility as a second screen to TV and it's literally the first draft of history," Wolff said.

"Normally a company like Twitter would have been public for some time," he said.

Since Jack Dorsey, Twitter's inventor, dispatched the first tweet from a downtown San Francisco office in March 2006, the service has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with more than 200 million regular users contributing more than 400 million posts a day.

Gold Prices Tumble As Rupee Makes A Comeback

NEW DELHI: Gold prices suffered the steepest fall in a week on Thursday falling by Rs 1,250 to Rs 30,950 per ten grams here on heavy sell-off by stockists as equity markets and rupee recovered after RBI's fresh measures.

Silver also plunged by Rs 1,800 to Rs 53,700 per kg on poor offtake by industrial units and weakening trend in overseas markets.

Traders said the precious metals fell sharply following fast recovery in rupee against the dollar after the new RBI chief announced measures to boost economic growth.

The rupee was trading higher by 84 paise at Rs 66.24 per dollar, while stock markets were up by over 2 per cent, denting the appeal of gold considered as safe haven for investors during economic turbulences.

New RBI governor Raghuram Rajan came out with a slew of measures to rescue the battered financial markets to boosting growth.

Traders said a weakening trend in overseas markets on expectations for reduced stimulus in the US and limited military strikes against Syria, further influenced sentiment.

Gold in Singapore, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, fell 0.7 per cent to 1,381.35 dollar an ounce and silver by 0.9 per cent to 23.27 an ounce.

On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity suffered Rs 1250 loss each to quote at Rs 30,950 and Rs 30,750 per ten grams respectively. It had gained Rs 1,100 in last two sessions.

Sovereign declined by Rs 200 to Rs 25,100 per piece of eight gram.

Silver ready dropped by Rs 1,800 to Rs 53,700 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 2400 to Rs 54,600 per kg.

Silver coins also fell by Rs 1,000 to Rs 88,000 for buying and Rs 89,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

UPDATE : Microsoft Buys Nokia for 7.2bn bid

Finland's Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, has been struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as Apple (AAPL.O) and Samsung (005930.KS).

Analysts say Elop's bold bet in 2011 to adopt Microsoft's untested Windows Phone software has yet to pay off.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014 and is subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders and regulatory approvals. Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's Windows software to run its mobile phones.

"It's a bold step into the future - a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," Microsoft's outgoing CEO, Steve Ballmer, said in a statement.

"Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."

Nokia said in a statement it expected that Elop, along with senior executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber, would transfer to Microsoft when the deal was concluded. It did not say what roles they would take at Microsoft.

Nokia board chairman Risto Siilasmaa would take over CEO duties while the Finnish firm looked for a new CEO, it said.

Elop, a Canadian hired by Nokia in 2010 from Microsoft, has been one of the favourites to take over as Microsoft chief when Ballmer steps down.

"The vendor is banking on the wave of phablet- driven smartphone adoption and is pushing the Canvas range of devices with bigger screens and compelling imaging capabilities," IDC said.

News : Indian Rupee hits a all time low of 61.16 against USD

The Indian rupee on Tuesday hit a new record low of 61.51 against the U.S. dollar edging past the previous low of 61.21 hit on July 8.

The partially convertible currency traded at 61.47 as of 10.02 a.m. as against Monday's close of 60.88.

The rupee weakened despite the dollar dipping against a basket of major currencies. Equity markets also saw selling pressure and weighed on the currency. The BSE Sensex slipped below the key 19,000 mark for the first time since June 27.

The prospect of further rupee falls is leading traders to expect additional measures from the RBI. Standard Chartered Bank expects the RBI to announce more measures to tighten cash conditions if the improvement in cash situation continues.

In the offshore non-deliverable forwards (NDF), the one-month contract was at 61.47 while the three-month was at 62.34.

Jamal Mecklai of Mecklai Financials told NDTV that the NDF market or the currency futures market is not a major driver of the Indian currency. The government and the Reserve Bank should instead focus on growth, he added...

Market : RBI keeps all Interest Rates Unchanged, concern on growth forecast

MUMBAI: Weighed down by a weak rupee, the Reserve Bank on Tuesday chose to keep all key interest rates unchanged and asked the government to take urgent steps to reign in the high current account deficit.

Lowering the GDP growth projection for the current fiscal to 5.5% from 5.7%, the central bank said the external sector is the "biggest threat" to economic stability.

It also said that the recent liquidity tightening measures, taken to support the rupee, will be rolled back in a calibrated manner as stability is restored to the foreign exchange market, enabling it to revert to the policy of supporting growth with continuing vigil on inflation.

The RBI will endeavour to keep inflation, which is under threat from a depreciating rupee, at 5% by March end.

"The policy stance is guided by the need for continuous vigil and preparedness to pro-actively respond to risks to the economy from external developments, especially those stemming from global financial markets," Governor D Subbarao said in what would be his last policy announcement unveiled here.

Accordingly, the repo rate or the rate at which RBI lends to the system, has been retained at 7.25% and the cash reserve ratio, the amount of deposits banks park with RBI, has been kept unchanged at 4%...

Market : Rupee Falls Down again, closing to Rs 60 against USD

The rupee trimmed its early losses but was still quoted lower by 83 paise to 59.53 per dollar after hitting 60-level on strong demand for the American currency from banks and importers amidst sharp fall in equity market.

Persistent capital outflows from foreign funds also affected the market sentiment.

The rupee resumed lower at 59.50 per dollar against the last closing level of 58.70 per dollar at Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market and dropped further to an all-time low of 60.00 per dollar before quoting at 59.53 per dollar at 1040 hrs.

In New York, the US dollar surged yesterday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank could slow the pace of its bond-buying programme later this year if its economic forecasts are accurate.

The Indian benchmark Sensex fell below the 19,000 level due to all-round selling pressure as the rupee hit record low against the dollar coupled with lower global cues. The Sensex dropped by 401.81 points, or 2.09%, to 18,843.89 in the late morning trade.

Market: Investment in gold won't be a good idea!

Till date, gold has been regarded as a safe bet for most investors, although it does see fluctuations in market, there has been rare incidents where the gold has gone down the buying price of any investors. But the finance minister says that the scenario is going to change soon as the government has no plans of increasing the import duty on gold!

Mr. Chidambaram was talking to Economic Times when he assured that the INR will find its way back to a safer position than what it is now.
According to Chidambaram it is wrong to say that gold is the 'safest investment' option. "It is wrong to say that there aren't other attractive investment instruments," he said. "People who are financially well informed should put their investments in other financial instruments," he added.

"I once again appeal to everyone to resist the temptation to buy gold. This will show positive impact on every aspect of Indian Economy," Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram went on to say that people will invest only when they get a good price on their investments. "People think that they are buying gold in rupees. Actually they are buying gold in dollars," he said. "If for one year there are no gold imports, it will change the current account deficit story of the country" he added.

Seeking to reassure that the panic over rupee's depreciation is unwarranted, Chidambaram said, "Steps have been taken to cure the currency's fall."

"There is concern about the rupee. What is happening in India is not unusual for countries with large current account deficit." According to Chidambaram, the rupee has been 'remarkably stable' over the last ten months.

Reiterating that there is 'no need to panic', Chidambaram said, "Rupee will find its level, we are concerned about the volatility. It is quite possible that rupee will regain losses."

In an attempt to woo investors to invest in the Indian markets and economy, Chidambaram said, "A number of measures have to be taken to revise growth in economy, fiscal consolidation tops list, followed by moderating inflation."

Stating that reviving investments is top priority, Chidambaram said, "After about 9 months we have acknowledgment that steps that we have taken have delivered results." "Reviving investor sentiment will yield results; the world continues to repose faith in India," he added.

While acknowledging that steps taken by the government have had the desired effect, Chidambaram said that the investment climate can benefit from more reforms. Reviving economy, rejuvenating investment sentiment might be slow, but we do not take our eyes off the ball, Chidambaram sought to assure.

"It is not an ODI match, a wicket or a six is expected in every ball in an ODI, economic reforms don't work that way," he said on a lighter note. "We have to take long term view of what is happening in India; results have been achieved; looking forward to more reforms," Chidambaram said. Chidambaram went on to highlight measures that the government will take in order to boost economic growth and contain fiscal and current account deficit. "These will include gas pricing, FDI limits, steps to be taken by SEBI based on Chandrashekhar Committee report, and skill development," he said.

So it is always a soothing sign for an average investor but many will be sad that the Gold prices will be seeing no great deflections through the coming days. Will this be a good news? It will only be decided by the coming times, at the moment, with the markets showing drastic changes, we are sure that Gold is still the safe bet!
