Zohra Sehgal turns 100

Legendary actress Zohra Sehgal turns 100. She was born on Apr 27, 1912 to Rohilla Pathan landlords in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. She started her career as a dancer with the legendary Uday Shankar's troupe that toured the world then. 

Zohra got married to Kameshwar Sehgal, a dancer from Indore who was eight years junior to her. She along with her husband set up a dance institute titled Zohresh Dance Institute in Lahore. 

She will celebrate her 100th birthday at home with the daughter and a few close friends. A source said that, "She is in fine health barring a few age-related complications, which are not serious, Her spirit is still high, along with her enthusiastic, articulate persona."

"Abhi na jaana chhod kar... ki cake abhi kata nahin... ki pet abhi bhara nahin" she recited on her 100th birthday, punning on her favourite song "Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon" by poet Hafeez Jullundhri as she cut a large chocolate cake.

Her characteristic lust for life appeared undimmed late Friday at the launch of her first official biography, "Zohra Sehgal: Fatty" by daughter Kiran Segal. And "Segal" is how they have preferred to spell the name.

The title "Fatty" is an endearment used by Kiran for her "weight conscious mother Zohra" who "is very particular about her figure like a 16-year-old starlet". Kiran said that, "She weighs herself every week and if she is a little bit above (overweight), then at lunch it is one toast instead of two."

Zohra has appeared in over 20 films. She is best remembered for her appearances in "Bhaji on the Beach", "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Bend It Like Beckham", "Dil Se...", "Kal Ho Na ho", "Saawariya", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham", "Veer Zaara" and "Cheeni Kum". 

In 2008, she was named the 'Laadli of the Century' by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF)-Laadli Media Awards. And she continues to prove how apt the title is for her!
