Prominent music directors of yesteryear's Ravi Shankar Sharma or popularly known as 'Bombay Ravi' passed away today. He was 86 and spent his last moments at his residence. He was undergoing prolonged treatment for illness.
Ravi Shankar sahib is a well known personality at bollywood and has also spread his music across 90 songs in Malayalam industry which did earn him the name 'Bombay Ravi'. He started his music journey by singing 'Vande Matharam' in AnandMath and his journey as music director started with Vachan (1954). Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Do Badan, Humraz, Ankhen, Nikah, Gharana, Khandan, Waqt, Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya, Neel Kamal and Gumrah are some of the major ones he scored music for in the list of nearly 250 Hindi films. He had won Filmfare awards for Gharana and Khandan. His special interest proved vital in shaping Mahendra Kapoor as a popular singer in Bollywood. He had won the national award for music in Sukrutham and Parinayam (Malayalam movies).
Ravi Shankar was introduced in Malayalam through Panchagni (1986) by director Hariharan, and in the same movie he had tuned two amazing hits penned by O N V Kurup, namely ‘Saaganarangale...." and ‘Aa Raathri maanju poy,’. After the successful run, he was offered many movies and has given memorable and nostalgic hits to the Malayalam Movie industry. His contributions are more remembered in Malayalam industry as movies like 'Nakhakshathangal' 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha', 'Vaishali' etc had the strongest point of music. His music in 'Sargam' had become a instant hit even before the movie was released and had been ruling the industry through nineties. He had won Kerala State awards for the same movie in 1991.
Malayali audience never considered him as an outsider as his songs blended the typical Malayali flavour. His songs in 14 films, including Ghazal, Vidyarambham, Padheyam, Parinayam, Sukrutham and Mayookham (2005) are some of the all-time favorites of Malayali community worldwide.Chitra had won the national award twice for his scores in Nakhakshatanagal and Vaishali with ONV’s national award winning song in Vaishali.
The cremation ceremony will be held on March 9, his wife had died in 1988 and his son Ajay is married to Varsha Usgaonkar, a Marathi and Hindi film actor.
