Vidhya receives another award

Actress Vidya Balan has received another award. This time she was awarded the Prabha Khaitan Puraskar 2012 from the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce.

Vidya was donned in an off-white sari with a rich blue-gold brocade border and a three-quarter velvet blouse, accessorized with just a pair of jhumkas. 

Vidya received the award from West Bengal Governor M.K.Narayanan who was with wife Padmini Narayanan in Kolkata on Wednesday. She addressed the governor saying that, "I feel proud to receive this award from you." To which the governor M.K. Narayanan said, "I am doubly privileged to present this award to Vidya Balan as I come from the same small town of Kerala where she was born."

The president of the chamber, Alka Bangur spoke about Vidya Balan's commitment to advancement of women's issues. The managing trustee of Prabha Khaitan Foundation, Sundeep Bhutoria presented Vidya with an embroidered shawl.

Vidya said that, "I feel extremely overwhelmed to receive this 'Prabha Khaitan Puraskar' specially after knowing a few names who has earlier received this award for excelling in their own field." She added, "I think women are taking the centre stage in various walks of life all over the country and cinema is just a reflection of that."

Vidya spoke in chaste Bengali, and said 'Ami Kolkatar meye'. She said that she felt "taller and a little proud" of herself after knowing the previous recipients of the award, include Shabana Azmi, Kapila Vatsayan, Medha Patkar and Shanu Lahiri.

She even said that she wanted to work in Bengali movies but hasn't received any offer till not. She said that, "Satyajit Ray is my favourite Bengali director. I am also fond of Rituparno's (Rituparno Ghosh) work."

'Prabha Khaitan Puraskar' is awarded to women for their outstanding achievements and commitments in various fields. Prabha Khaitan, a former president of the chamber started this award in 1992 with an aim to empower women. Earlier in 1996, actor Shabana Azmi received this award. Bengali author Nabaneeta Dev Sen were among the panel of the judges for selecting the recipient of the award.
