The Dirty Picture Review

In : |

The Plot:

As promised the movie is the real life portrayal of South sex icon 'Silk Smitha'. The movie starts with 'Reshma' a village girl, who has her aim to reach stardom sets her journey to Chennai (Madras) with her spirits to drive her through. After the usual period of struggle she gets to reach the silver screen with a sensuous item number and this drives the town crazy. It doesn't take her long to storm the box office as Silk, the sex symbol who's driving a whole generation crazy with her oomph.

Soon the industry is crazy about her and everyone wants a piece of her, soon her fans, lovers and worshipers start to multiply by the day, but soon it falls the downhill. The story is about if Silk will be able to overcome the discards that she receives through the time.

The Performance:

As the movie progresses, the small-town girl gains stardom with her body alone as her support and the fans growing through each show that she does. Vidya Balan portrays excellently a woman who with her high confidence is able to make her name in the man's world. As the show goes more dirty, there are few who does think her as a scum in the industry which includes Abraham (Emraan Harshmi), who is a art film maker and many more feminist associations that are shown in the movie. But as the movie shows this seldom has an effect on the actress as great stars like Suryakant (Nasseruddin Shah) still wants to have her in movies and the Silk gets to achieve great success in the industry than any other actress.

The problem starts when Vidya's mother shuts the door against her she finds the cost of the success. Further the journalists who are bugging her to get an interview refuse to take her to a page 3 parties. Also she gets a bad vibe from her lover Suryakant (Nasseruddin Shah) when he tries to hide her in bathroom when his wife arrives. She tries to ignore these rejections with drinks and a number of lovers which includes Tushaar Kapoor, but the guilt still holds on.

Partially responsible for her angst too was the arrogance that stars acquire with the onrush of success. One by one, she began to lose her friends in the industry and work stopped coming her way due to her cocky attitude. Didn't take long for the superstar to hit the road to destruction and end up as a sorry picture of failure and ruin. In this decrepit state -- the fate of most erstwhile Bollywood heroines -- her only friend was the man who hated her the most, Emraan Hashmi. But was it already too late to resuscitate a broken soul....

Final words on film:

This movie is centered around Vidya and her performance. There are various shades of Vidya shown and she has once again proved herself beyond doubt as a best actress. There has always been a narrow line drawn between sexuality and vulgarity and it is never a vulgar film. Also the director Milan Luthria  has portrayed sexuality beyond the f word. This doesn't mean that the male roles are weak, they manage to hold their own in full measure, despite the relative meagerness of their roles. Also, it is the naughty dialogues (Rajat Arora) of the film which add immense flavour to the proceedings. It's a no-holds-barred screenplay which rightly refuses to treat sex as a four letter word. Kudos to Milan Luthria for handling such a controversial theme with such sensitivity and boldness.

Verdict:

A must watch movie but definitely not a family movie for your weekend!
