CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government on Friday opened 12 arts and science colleges and two university-constituent arts and science colleges in the state to ensure rural students an easy access to higher education.
In the last two years, 22 arts and science colleges were opened, taking the number of government colleges in the state to 62.
CM J Jayalalithaaopened the colleges through video-conferencing from Chennai. The colleges have come up at Karambakudi (Pudukottai), Peravurani (Thanjavur), Kangeyam (Tirupur), Kumarapalayam (Namakkal), Karimangalam (Dharmapuri), Hosur (Krishnagiri), Uthiramerur (Kancheepuram), Kovilpatti (Tuticorin), Kadaladi, Tiruvadanai and Mudukulathur (Ramanathapuram), and Sivakasi (Vridhunagar). Two university-constituent arts and science colleges have been opened at Veppur in Perambalur and Tittakudi in Cuddalore. The state has sanctioned 210 teaching and 238 non-teaching staff to these colleges. An official release said the colleges have been sanctioned `17.9 crore for improving infrastructure and `105.85 crore for construction of buildings.
