Rekha to receive outstanding achievement award

In : |

57 year old Bollywood Veteran actress Rekha who has been in bollywood for the past three decades will now be given an award for 'Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema' at the IIFA Awards 2012.

Rekha said that, "I am extremely humbled to be appreciated... It has been a long journey and hopefully my passion and love for cinema will continue to reach out to all my fans. I am especially happy to be honoured at a time when the industry celebrates a centenary of Indian films."

Rekha's real name is Bhanurekha Ganesan. She is the daughter of South Indian film stars, Gemini Ganesan and Pushpavalli. She is noted for her versatility and acknowledged as one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema. Rekha started her career in 1966 as a child actress in the Telugu movie Rangula Ratnam, though her film debut as a lead happened four years later with Sawan Bhadon (1970). Despite the success of several of her early films, she was often panned for her looks and it was not until the mid-to-late 1970s that she got recognition as an actress. Since the late 1970s, after undertaking a physical transformation, she has been featured as a glamour icon in the Indian media.

Every year the  IIFA honours a member of the film fraternity who has made significant contributions to Indian cinema. Prior to Rekha, VK Murthy and Yash Johar have received this award.

Andre Timmins, Director, Wizcraft International Entertainment said that, "Over the years, we have paid tribute to the biggest names in the Indian film industry, recognising their contribution towards cinema. In our 13th year, IIFA is proud to honour India's most loved actress Rekha for her immense work and contribution to the Indian film industry."

The 13th IIFA Weekend will be hosted in the Lion City of Singapore from the June 7-9.
